It is a subsidiary of Empire Company Limited and the company announced its exit of movie theater business in the year 2013. The company sold its majority of business with twenty-four sold to Cineplex in Atlantic Canada and twenty-three sold to Landmark Cinemas in Ontario, Western Canada and the three theaters were closed down.

Empire Theaters were established in the year 1978 and in the year 2005, Empire Theaters acquired twenty-seven theaters with more than two-hundred screens. In the year 2009, the Empire Theaters chain had more than forty-five screens equipped with RealD 3D and digital projection capabilities. The Theater also provided the state-of-the-art movie presentation facilities with the acquisition of AMC Theaters.
