JCP and L (JCPL) is one of the first electric utility companies to start operation in New Jersey. It was the subsidiary of GPU before owned by FirstEnergy. JCPL dates back to 1906, when GPU was formed as Associated Gas and Electric Company or Ageco. Ageco was composed of 12 gas and electric utilities spanning New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was renamed to General Public Utilities Corporation in 1946. Its business flourished after the World War II. Its main subsidiaries were Jersey Central Power and Light, Metropolitan Edison Company, Pennsylvania Electric Company, Manila Electric Company and New Jersey Power and Light.
