The Singapore Zoo occupied 69 acres of Singapore's heavily forested central catchment area. The cost of 9 million Singapore dollar was granted by the government of Singapore for the Zoo development which commenced into operations on 27th June 1973. It is managed and operated by Wildlife Reserves Singapore who also took care of the neighbouring Night Safari and the Jurong BirdPark. It is the habitat of 315 species of animal and 16% of them is threatened species. This attracts approximately 1.6 million visitors every year.
The history of the Singapore Zoo was started in 1969 when a part of the land of Public Utilities Board was used to open recreational facility. The land of 88 hectares set for the construction of a zoological garden. In 1970, staff and experienced people was hired for consultancy and in 1971 construction started. The animals was collected by dealers from all over the world. The inauguration day of The Singapore Zoo was 27th June 1973 and its stock contains 270 animals from over 72 species and a staff of 130 officials.
