Bashar Hafez al-Assad is the son of Hafez al-Assad, who led Syria, as President for 30 years until his death. Bashar Hafez al-Assad was born on 11 September 1965 and succeeded his father as President of Syria in 2000. He graduated from Damascus University in 1988 and entered the military academy in 1998. His political party affiliations include Syrian Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party and National Progressive Front.He has been honored with many Awards or decorations viz. Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Francis, Collar of the Order of the Liberator, Grand Cordon of the National Order of the Cedar etc.
