University of Asmara is situated in Asmara, Eritrea. It was established in 1958 as Eritrea's first university. University of Asmara offered Diploma programs in the Commerce, Arts, Sciences etc. In 2001 University of Asmara witnessed protests by the students against the alleged excessive government control of the university. University of Asmara has been non-functional since the end of the academic year 2005-2006.
