Army Knowledge Online is a web portal that offers the enterprises information to both the American military and US Department of Defense customers. It offers services through both classified and non-classified networks. These networks include portal, e-mail, discovery and many others. AKO was founded in the 1990s. It was known as the test version of development of the project, operated by
the General office Management Office. The project was started with the name of A2OL American Army Online, but
Due to same name of other company, its name was changed to AKO. Every User can built their own pages and takes part in online discussion. It is single entry point to army persons for Internet access. AKO is recognized as the largest intranet across the world. Approximately, 50 percent soldiers uses the online service daily for both official and personals use. Since its inception to 2008, the web portal has been logged-in one billion times. The web portal has 2,300,000 registered users. It is logged in by 1,000,000 times by more than 350,000 persons daily. AKO handles approximately 12,000,000 emails, everyday.
AKO consists of some products like Appian Business Process Management which provides base for information dissemination, process management and other services available on the portal. It allows the users to set audience control.
