History and Development
It is considered as one of the first cellular service provider company's trade name. It was formed by
Motorola and the American Radio Telephone Service in the year 1977 but it began its operations in 1984 in Baltimore, Washington, D.C. In 1992, Southwestern
Bell Mobile System collaborated with McCaw Communications and thus the partnership was called as
Cellular One Group. The group was joined by the
Vanguard Cellular Systems in 1992. Till 1995, the companies affiliated more than 5 million customers in the United States. The same year SNET also joined the group. The Cellular One group came completely under the Western Wireless in 2001 when the wireless operations of
Bellsouth and SBC Communications were merged into
Cingular Wireless. The naming rights of the brand were bought by Dobson in December 2005 and thus on November 15, 2007 Dobson was overtook by AT&T along with the Cellular One brand name. One year later the brand was overtook by Trilogy Partners from AT&T.
