The Inland Fisheries Training Centre, started in 1947 and till then functioning under the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore in West Bengal, was taken over by Central Institute of Fisheries Education - CIFE Kolkata in October, 1967. Earlier the centre was located in the campus of CIFRI Barrackpore. During 1997-98 the centre was shifted to its own building located in Salt Lake City, Kolkatta. The centre is conducting one year post-graduate certificate course in Inland Fisheries. Also need based capsule course programmes organizing in different aspects of fisheries, particularly carp breeding and nursery management, integrated fish farming, ornamental fish culture, and soil and water management for aquaculture. The centre provides consultancy support to local farmers from time to time.
Central Institute of Fisheries Education - CIFE Kolkata has been accredited by ICAR for five years from September, 2007 to August, 2012. CIFE offers Master of Fishery Science programmes in nine disciplines viz. Fisheries Resources Management, Aquaculture, Post-harvest Technology, Fish Nutrition and Biochemistry, Fish Pathology and Microbiology, Fish Genetics and Biotechnology, Fish Business Management, Aquatic Environment Management and Fisheries Extension, while the doctoral programmes are offered in the ten disciplines viz. Fisheries Resources Management, Aquaculture, Post-harvest Technology, Fish Genetics, Fish Biotechnology, Fish Nutrition and Biochemistry, Fish Pathology and Microbiology, Fish Business Management, Aquatic Environment Management and Fisheries Extension. The institution is equipped with LCD, Scanner, CD Writer and other equipments wherein the students and teacher educators fully avail the facilities. CIFE has developed a well equipped Electronics/Physics lab under the able guidance of experienced faculties. Most modern electronics practical kits are available in the Lab. Besides the institution have well furnished laboratories for Biotechnology, Microbiology, Physics & Chemistry.

The juries and seminars are conducted in seminar hall with ultra modern LCD projector, computer, and audio and video facilities. The college building seminar hall has a capacity of 100, The IT building hall has a capacity of 250 and all the juries and seminars are conducted in the seminar hall. The hall is equipped with ultra modern LCD projector, computer workstation, audio-visual facilities and wireless Internet facilities.
Central Institute of Fisheries Education - CIFE Kolkata offers hostel facilities to the students in the hostel located in the campus that is meant for all students of CIFE. Psychology Lab has all the tests and the corresponding equipments for conducting psychology experiments based on B. Ed. syllabus. College also provides expert guidance and counseling services to needy students. CIFE has several classrooms which are well equipped with the latest teaching aids and equipments.
