Giant Tiger History
The first Giant Tiger store was opened in 1961 by Gordon Reid in Ottawa, whereas second store was opened in 1965. Between 1965 and 2007, company opened around 180 stores. North West Company & Giant Tiger signed 30-year Master Franchise Agreement that gives North West Company right to open & operate 72 Giant Tiger stores in western Canada. The company also opened first international store in 2004 in New York, but the store was closed in 2009.

Chez Tante Marie stores was established by company in 1977 in Hull and Gatineau, Quebec with both the stores still trade under same name. In 1996, the Scott’s Discount brand was launched by Giant tiger as an alternative format for smaller stores.
