Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly at Izatnagar was initially established as the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory in 1889 for conducting research for the protection of Indian livestock wealth from the dreaded diseases. The foundation stone of the laboratory was laid by the Governor of Bombay on December 9, 1889 in about 2.2. ha of land presented by a philanthropist, Sir Dinshaw Monock ji Petit Bart adjoining the College of Science at Pune.
The Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly research is currently addressed with clear benchmarking of deliverables through 157 research and 44 service projects. The institute undertakes basic, advanced and applied research through 85 externally funded projects. A number of national and international research projects on animal health and production systems are addressed by the institute. Presently 19 National Agricultural Innovation Projects, 3 All India Network Projects, 3 Outreach Program and 26 DBT funded projects are operational. Besides these extramural funded programmes the institute is having 5 international collaborative projects with USA, UK, Australia, international organization, IAEA, etc.
Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly with its long heritage and glorious scientific achievements has always enjoyed a certain prestige and tradition of its own. The institute at its headquarters functions through more than 20 research divisions, 400 acres livestock and fodder production farms, feed technology unit, a modern computerized library, engineering section, medical hospital, etc. Besides the main campus, three regional stations at Kolkata, Paramour and Srinagar and two full-fledged campuses at Mukteswar in Uttarakhand and Bangalore in Karnataka are the other functional units of the institute dedicated to livestock research and development. Further, the institute is the seat of two Centers of Advanced Faculty Training (Formerly Centers of Advanced Studies) in Animal Nutrition, and Veterinary Physiology, many a Network outreach programmes, National Agricultural Innovation Projects and All India Co-ordinate Research Projects.

Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly encourages extra-curricular activities outside the classroom that enrich cultural, physical and social life of students. Spacious play grounds are provided in the students' hostels and necessary facilities exist for outdoor games like cricket, hockey, volley ball, badminton and various other athletic events. There are facilities also for indoor games in each hostel. There is a Student Sports Fund to which every student subscribes a sum of Rs. 100/- at the beginning of each academic year. The amount so collected is used in improving the sports facilities for the students and promoting literary activities among them.

The National Library of Veterinary Sciences at Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly has a collection of more than 2,50,000 highly specialized reading material in the form of books, journals, monographs, theses, reference works published data, bulletins, reviews, advances, reports, reprints, micro-documents etc. The library is subscribing about 125 foreign journals and about 103 Indian journals each year. Facilities for information, access and retrieval from CD-ROM databases in the multi-user environment is provided using CD-Mirror Hybrid Server on nominal charges. Library has been using Libsys 4.0 software for automation of library activities. All the Ph.D. Theses available in the library have been digitized in PDF form and are available for use in library premises. Library provides E-mail and Internet facilities to its users at 24 terminals during all working hours and days. Three reading sections of the library are air-conditioned. Digital Video Recording based Close Circuit TV system with 22 cameras is being used in the various sections of the library for electronic surveillance. Photocopy facility is also made available in the library at nominal charges.
Indian Veterinary Research Institute - IVRI Bareilly has a well developed Computer Centre with adequate facilities for students for statistical analysis of data, etc. generated out of thesis research work. A Course on Data Processing and Computer Application is offered to the P.G. students by the Centre. Internet, intranet and e-mail facilities are also available.
