Originally established in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) with the financial assistance of an American Philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi started functioning from New Delhi since 1936 when it was shifted to its present site after a major earthquake damaged the Institute’s building at Pusa (Bihar). The Institute’s popular name ‘Pusa Institute’ traces its origin to the establishment of the Institute at Pusa.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi is the country’s premier national Institute for agricultural research, education and extension. It has the status of a ‘Deemed-tube-University’ under the UGC Act of 1956, and awards M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in various agricultural disciplines.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi (hereinafter referred to as Institute) Junior and Senior Scholarship shall be awarded to M.Sc. and Ph.D. students admitted under General Open Competition Scheme on the following terms and conditions: The Awards shall be made by the Dean and Joint Director (Education) of the Institute on the advice of the “Standing Committee on Scholarships Financial Assistance and Academic Progress”, which shall take into consideration the merit of each applicant based initially on his admission and subsequently on his performance at the School.

The present campus of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi is a self-contained sylvan complex spread over an area of about 500 hectares (approx. 1250 acres). It is located about 8 km (5 miles) west of New Delhi Railway Station, and about 16 km (10 miles) east of Indira Gandhi International Airport at Palma. The location stands at 28.080N and 77.120E, the height above mean sea level being 228.61 meters (750 feet). It is adjacent to hill side road. The climate is sub-temperate and semi-arid. The mean maximum daily temperature during the hot weather (May-October) ranges from 32.20C to 400C and the mean minimum temperature from 12.20C to 27.50C. June to September is rainy months during which about 500 mm of rainfall is received. Winter sets in from mid-November and is delightful. The mean maximum temperature during winter (November-March) ranges from 20.10C to 29.10C and the mean minimum temperature from 5.60C to 12.70C. During winter, a small amount of rainfall (about 63 mm) is received.

Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi Library is one of the largest and the finest aerobiological libraries in South East Asia housing a total of 6 lakh publications including 1 lakh books/monographs, 3,50,000 journal volumes, 45,000 bulletins, 15,000 post graduate theses, 10,000 pamphlets, 30,000 news clippings, 30,000 reports, and other reference materials. The Library has, on its role, 2000 members, viz., students, scientists and technical staff. It also serves about 8,000 visitors every year. The Library functions as the depository of FAO, IDRC and AVRDC publications and also as the National Depository for CGIAR institutes publications.

Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi is a fully residential campus for the students. Institute has Five Hostels for Boys, one for Girls and one hostel is for married students. These are spacious, well furnished hostels. Apart from hygienic foods, hostels provide recreational facilities including TVs, indoor games, book shop, hair dressing saloon etc. Each hostel has its own wardens, a member of faculty who administers the hostels.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi encourages extracurricular activities that enrich cultural, physical and social life of students. Spacious playgrounds are provided near the student hostels and necessary facilities exist for outdoor games like cricket, football, hockey, volleyball, tennis, badminton and various athletic events. There are facilities also for indoor games like Chess, Carom and Table Tennis in each hostel. There is a Students Sports Fund to which every student subscribes at the beginning of each academic year. Various yoga classes are organized free of cost from time to time to make awareness in students and residents for fitness.
The Auditorium is named after the ex-director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute - IARI New Delhi Dr. B. P. Pal. It has a seating capacity of 350. It is fully AC, with LCD projector and audio-video facilities. Other facilities include a Control Room, Rehearsal Room, Editing Room and A VIP Room. There is pantry available with direct access to the stage. It’s free for IARI and ICAR institutional activates. Outsiders are charged INR 10000 per day with permission from the Director, IARI.
