Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Bangalore was established in 1987. It was formally inaugurated by the then Education Minister, Govt. of Karnataka, Shri Jeevraj Alva on 1st February 1989. Till September 1996 it was housed in the Directorate of Collegiate Education (Govt. of Karnataka) premises just adjacent to Vidhana Soudha. It moved to a spacious rented building at Jayanagar from September 1996.
The mission of Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Bangalore is to advance frontiers of knowledge and promote its dissemination through sustainable open and distance learning systems seamlessly accessible to all, including hitherto unreached, from among whom the leaders and innovators of tomorrow will emerge. Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Bangalore, the National Resource Centre for Open and Distance Learning with international recognition and presence, shall provide seamless access to sustainable and learner-centric quality education, skill up gradation and training to all by using innovative technologies and methodologies and ensuring convergence of existing systems for massive human resource required for promoting integrated national development and global understanding.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Bangalore was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985. Today, it serves the educational aspirations of about 1.5 million students in India and 35 countries abroad through 11 Schools of Studies and an elaborate network of 58 regional centers, 7 sub- regional centers, 1400 study centers, and 41 overseas centers.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Bangalore is making all efforts to take higher education to the doorsteps of the hitherto unreached. Apart from teaching and research, extension and training form the mainstay of its academic activities. It also acts as a national resource centre; and more importantly, functions as an apex body to promote and maintain standards of distance education.
Based on its contribution in Distance Education the Commonwealth of Learning has recognized it as one of its ‘Centers of Excellence’. It also has the unique privilege of hosting the Secretariats of SAARC Consortium of Open Distance Learning (SACODIL) approved by Heads of Govt. of SAARC Nations and Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET) initially promoted by UNESCO. The library has the largest collection of books, journals and other related materials in the field of Distance Education, throughout the country. The Library was established in 1986 in tune with the objectives of IGNOU.
