To trace the history of Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata is to trace a part of India’s freedom movement, at least from the Swadeshi Movement onwards. It was 1905 -1906. Bengal stood divided. The times were feverish. The hegemony of the British establishment had to be challenged. Education had to play a new role in this changed scenario. It had to become a new form of resistance through which the emergent nationalist spirit could be propagated. With this in mind the National Council of Education (NCE) came into being. Its primary aim was to impart education - literary, scientific and technical on national lines exclusively under national control. To achieve self-reliance, through education. The foundation of the NCE was made possible by the munificence - scholarly as well as monetary - of the likes of Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik , Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury of Gouripur as well as Sir Rash Behari Ghosh (first President of NCE), poet Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh.
In 1910 the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal which looked after Bengal Technical Institute (which later became College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal) was amalgamated to NCE. NCE henceforth looked after the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal which by 1940 was virtually functioning as a University. After Independence, the Government of West Bengal, with the concurrence of the Govt. of India, enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata on the 24th of December 1955.
Now Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata has successfully established itself as a foremost Indian University with a vast repertoire of courses offered, an enviable list of faculty members and has come to be known for its commitment towards advanced study and research.

Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata Library was started along with the establishment of the University in 1955 in order to cater the academic and research needs of the faculty, research scholars, students, officers and non-teaching staff. Since then, the Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata Library has gone from strength to strength to live up to the expectations of its immediate clientele. It is one of the best-equipped libraries in the country. The University is proud of its library system, which comprises the Central Library, Salt Lake Campus Library, 33 Departmental Libraries under the Faculty of Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, and also the Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata Libraries attached with the Schools and Centers for studies. The Central Library of Jadavpur University is one of the central facilities used by all types of members of this University. This is the third largest library in West Bengal. The Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata Central Library is housed in a three-storied building on the campus. Its shelf space and working space total 36,000 sq. ft., (approx) and is being extended by new construction of Annex Building 5,500 sq. ft. (approx.) in each floor i.e. total 22,000 sq. ft. There is a separate library 6,500 sq. ft. (approx.) on the Second Campus at Salt Lake. Each Department and Centre/School has its own space for Library facilities.
Canteens are a part and parcel of Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata campus life. You may take a bite and carry on with your work. There are six Canteens on the main campus and one at the Salt lake Campus. Students Canteen Bidhan Chandra Vidyarthi Bhavan of Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata is expected to expand and grow into a Students building housing the offices of all recreational clubs and societies. At present, it has arrangements for indoor games for boys and girls and a cafeteria. This cafeteria of the Jadavpur University Kolkata, with its spacious sitting place and decorated walls, is a nice place for budding intellectuals. One may enjoy tea or coffee here along with snacks, paying less than other places, as the Canteen is subsidized by the Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata for its staff payment and the business is supervised by a Students’ Committee. C.E.T Canteen of the university is a privately run Canteen as old as Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata itself. Situated as it is at the very main gate, it’s a resting-place for early-comers and late goers. Old boys always carry a nostalgic feeling for the place.
Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata offers different kind of courses in different streams such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Technology, and Bachelor of Science as well as Master courses leading to Master of Arts, Master of Technology, and Master of Science. Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata also offers Doctoral, Diploma and post graduate Diploma courses also.
Though attachment to a factory for a specified periodic not a precondition for an Engineering Degree here, adequate arrangements are made for intensive factory visits and vocational training at the factories. As the graduate programme is completed the students are recommended to various firms and establishments who want qualified young people for Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata organizations.
The Government has established an Employment Bureau on the Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata campus. It helps in registering the students' names for employment, thus avoiding long queues at the Employment Exchange. An officer, well informed regarding employment market and in constant touch with the employers is there to guide and assist. No doubt his job is easier for Jadavpur University-JU Kolkata Engineering Graduates than those of Arts and Science Faculties. About 100 companies come each year for campus recruitment during pre final year. Rate of placement from campus is around 80 percent.
