Located in the heart of India, named after the architect of modern India, Let. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the biggest multi-campus University, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smt. Indira Gandhi on October 2, 1964. At present, JNKVV encompasses seven Agriculture, two Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and one Agricultural Engineering Colleges; nine Zonal Research Stations; 16 Regional Research Stations and 18 Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVK) in 9 agro-climatic zones spread over 45 districts. The Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur occupies an area of about 1966 ha out of which 1250 ha is utilized for agricultural research and seed Production. The overall climate varies from semi-arid to sub-humid with hot summer, cool and dry winter and 600-1600mm mean rainfall. The area under the University jurisdiction contains seven soil types, varying from heavy black to light alluvial. The soils are deficient in available nitrogen, phosphorus, Zn and sulphur but medium to high in potash.
The mission of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur to conduct Education, Research and Extension activities for enhancing productivity, profitability and sustainability of agricultural production systems and quality of rural livelihood in the state Madhya Pradesh.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur was established on the recommendations of University Education Commission in 1949 and two joint Indo-American Teams on Agricultural Research and Education in 1954-55 and 1959-60, on the pattern of Land Grant Colleges of the United States of America by transferring the existing six Government Colleges of Agriculture, and two Colleges of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry under an act of Madhya Pradesh legislature passed in 1963. Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive of the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur. He is supported by Director of Instruction, Director of Research Services and Director of Extension Services. Whereas Faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Engineering are headed by respective Faculty Deans, supported by Deans of constituent Colleges and Heads of Departments. Registrar and Comptroller support the Vice Chancellor in administration and financial matters.

Multidisciplinary research of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur is conducted in Natural Resource Management, Crop Improvement, Crop Protection, Post Harvest Technology, Farm Machinery and Livestock Production and Management. These are well complimented by the units of Statistics, Agricultural Economics, Computer Applications and Instrumentation. Activities of the University are fulfilled by well-equipped farms, laboratories, clinics, workshops, glass-houses, library, ARIS and informatics. Reorganizing of agricultural research through National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) and National Agricultural Technology Projects (NATP) enabled the university to develop infrastructure and strengthen capabilities. As on date, 67 All India Coordinated Research/Network projects, 62 ad-hoc projects, 52 State Plan and Non-plan projects and 49 NATP sponsored by various agencies are under operation.

The university has emerged as a leading research organization having a major stake in the agricultural development of the state.
Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur has well equipped laboratories, library, instructional farm, ARIS cell linked with global information system, class-room facilities and qualified faculty. Central Library at Jabalpur houses exhaustive literature besides international abstracting services with CD-ROM and Internet facilities. The students live in pleasant and intellectually stimulating environment with well-furnished hostels for boys and girls. Well-equipped Gymnasium, NCC, NSS, educational tours and agro-industrial information enable students to develop their personality, whereas placement cell guides them to choose the profession. Rural Agricultural Work Experience is imparted to the students to understand the real world situation. Since inception, about 12547 students have obtained Bachelors, 4826 Masters and 280 Doctorate degrees in all the three faculties.
With a view to serve small and medium agro based industry and entrepreneurs and to create their own occupational niches the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya - JNKVV Jabalpur established a Consultancy Processing Cell (CPC). It organizes training programmes in selected key areas for different levels of functionaries. The University offers training courses for entrepreneurs, subject matter specialist and extension workers through Directorate of Extension at different locations. Centre for Advance Studies in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry and Centre for Excellence in Trainings at Agriculture College offer trainings regularly at national level.
