Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl is the Constituent College of Mizoram University. The college caters courses up to Honors level in 19 subject areas of Arts, Science and Commerce streams. The academic programme include, apart from effective class room teaching, two terminal exams, periodic class tests, seminars, assignments, remedial courses, field studies etc. The distinctive feature of the college is its unique setting – a couple of kilometers down the hill away from the hub of the Aizawl Town is the sprawling 760 acres campus. Its lush-green vegetation, the result of 30yrs of nurturing the semi-isolation of the campus, wide-open space with luxuriant natural vegetation provide an excellent atmosphere of learning that a student dream for.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl then named ‘Aijal College” came up on 15th August 1958 to become the first Institution of Higher education in Mizoram. It was founded and managed by a group of Mizo elders. Pu Pachhunga, the leading entrepreneur of the day donated a very substantial amount of money for the college and the college was thereafter named Pachhunga Memorial College.
In 1965 the Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl was provincialzed by the Assam Government and the college was renamed as Pachhunga Memorial Government College, commonly known as PMG. On April 19, 1979 the North Eastern Hill University adopted and upgraded the college as its only Constituent College to become a pace-setting institution. The college eventually received its fourth name Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl , P.U.C. in short. Again on July, 2001 the college was taken over by the Mizoram University College. The name Pachhunga University College (PUC), however is not changed.
Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl has a sprawling campus, naturally rich in biodiversity in which one-third of which is fenced by high brick wall and the rest bounded by rivulets and gorges. The land allotted by Mizo District Council was 103 acres. Later on, the college purchased private lands so that the entire land mass encircled by rivulets on the northern, southern and eastern sides belongs to the college.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl land now comprises 730 acres which is large enough to accommodate a University with the entire physical infrastructure like buildings, playground, quarters, Botanical garden, and Zoological garden etc. There are, at present, ten Mails headed by the Security Officer to look after and protect the land from encroachment and game poaching. Because of the successful greening process that has been carried out for nearly four decades, the Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl land now provides beautiful lush green scenery for the Aizawl city. The Campus is in itself the pride and joy of Aizawl City. Apart from this, Noise Pollution level studies by the Environmental Science Department indicate that amongst all the Colleges in Aizawl City, PUC is the least noise polluted college, which makes it ideal for Higher Education.
Hostel seats are allotted on the basis of academic records, remoteness of the applicants’ home village, and performance at the Interview conducted by the Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl hostel Committee. Apart from the 50 seater New Boys’ Hostel, the old 75 seater Hostel Building is still in use. The number of Hostel Boarders in 2006-2007 sessions was 82. During 2007-2008, 109 boarders have been admitted. The boarders under the warden ship of Dr. R. Ramthara, Lecturer, Geography Department, have been very helpful and instrumental in almost all Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl co-curricular activities. Their examination results, too, have been better than that of day’s scholars over the years. A 50 seater girl’s hostel started from 2008 session and selection procedure for the girls hostel is the same as the bows hostel. Dr Rangila Devi, Assistant Professor Department of Physics is the current Warden.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl have one of the largest Playground in Mizoram other outdoor sport facilities includes Basket Ball court and Volley Ball Court. Indoor facilitated for Badminton and Table tennis are provided in the auditorium. The Donor ministry, GOI retained Rs 3 crores for the Construction of Multi complex Auditorium and as required by them we are now processing for technical back up from the Government of Mizoram.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl provide a health clinic every Friday of a week inside the campus. This clinic is run in collaboration with the parent University, Mizoram University. Doctors and nurses see to the health of the Faculties, staff and students and attend their medical need. This provides the college employees and students with basic and necessary medicine free of cost.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl provides transportation to the students, faculties and staff. A fleet of three buses provide transportation to and from the college at regular intervals. The routes include College to Treasury square via Sikulpuikawn from the college and Treasury square via Republic veng to the college. The First Bus Start at 8:45 a.m. from the college and last bus at 4:15 p.m.
The Pachhunga University College – PUC Aizawl Library is one of the largest institutional Libraries in North Eastern India with a rich stock of Books, Journals, Magazines and News Papers. Open self system gives the Students easy access to books. Spacious reading room helps the Scholars to browse through Books and Journals at leisure. A wide range of Encyclopedia and advanced Books of Knowledge provide a ready reference to Library users. A new Library will be constructed during the 11th plan.
