Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga was established on August 5, 1972 by an Ordinance of the Government of Bihar subsequently enacted through legislatures. The University is governed by the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976. The University was renamed as LALIT NARAYAN MITHILA UNIVERSITY vides University notification No. 6760-7244 dated 28 April, 1980.
The territorial jurisdiction of the Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga is spread over four districts of Bihar namely Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur and Begusarai. The university has 43 constituent colleges and 25 affiliated colleges besides two government colleges – Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital and Rural Institute, Birouli, Samastipur. 42 constituent colleges and 07 affiliated colleges are registered under section 2 f and 12(B) of the U.G.C. Act, 1956. The university has a picturesque and lush green campus spread over an area of nearly 230 acres.
The Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga is running in the buildings donated by Maharaja of Darbhanga, that were originally built either to run his office or for residential purposes for Maharaja himself, his family and staff. A few years following its establishment and subsequent recognition by the U.G.C. a master plan (copy attached) was developed. Till date, only the science faculties have their own infrastructural facilities, that too, cannot be said to be complete, since in some cases only a portion of the master plan were constructed due to financial reasons. Recently a separate building for Humanities has been completed. However, because of rational, planned and optimal utilization of our infrastructure we are able in augmenting our academic needs to a reasonable existent. The Central Library, as per the master plan, has also been partially constructed and in use with more than 1.7 laces books, but availability of national and international journals, reprographic facilities, computers, reading room, book banks and ensured electric supply is some points that demand more attention.

The donation of the Darbhanga Raj Library to Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga in 1975 led to the rechristening of the University Library as Maharajadhiraja Kameshwara Singh Library. The University Library has two wings: Darbhanga Raj Library Wing christened as Maharajadhiraja Kameshwara Singh Library and New Collection Wing. The Raj Library Wing contains more than 70,000 volumes of books in English and Sanskrit besides thousands in French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Bengali and Hindi. The New Collection Wing has 1.15 lakh volumes. Thus the total collection is 1.85 lakh. Much of this collection is of immense antique value having been published in 1672, 1683, 1688, 1744.

Sports are promoted as a co-curricular activity in the Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga to inculcate sportsman spirit among students and to activate national integration among all concerned. The Sports Committee, a statutory body, acts as the nodal administrative agency to manage, develop and organize sports in the university. This Committee with the Vice Chancellor as its Chairman has six other members’ insisting of Pro-Vice Chancellor, two heads of Departments, two Principals and a Professor-in-Charge, as it’s Member-Secretary.
Lalit Narayan Mithila University - Darbhanga has been sending teams for participation at Inter-University level since 1975. The process of achievements started with the team which won the East Zone Inter-University tournament for the first time in 1980. Thereafter, L.N.M.U. teams have been bringing laurels to the University in various games like Football (M), Volleyball (M), Cricket (M), Table Tennis (W) and Football (W). To cap the list of achievements of our sports teams, it is worthwhile to mention that our boys in the past won Sir Sultan Ahmad Trophy continuously for three years and secured second position in Women Football Tournament (2001-2002) at the All-India Inter-University level.
