Overview: The recently rechristened Pilbara Institute - Karratha covers an area of 502,000 sq km. Included in this vast region are the Shires of Ashburton, Roebourne, East Pilbara and the Town of Port Hedland. And all of this in a perfect blend of vast plains and rugged gorges. These gorges are known for housing some of the largest open-cut mines on Earth as well as their expansive reserves of natural resources like oil and gas. Considering, all of this, it isn’t surprising to know that Pilbara is responsible for almost 8% of Australia’s exports.
Established By: The Pilbara Institute (formerly known as Pilbara TAFE) is funded by the Government and is accredited by the Western Australian Training Accreditation Council (WA TAC) under Section 27(1) of the Vocational Education and Training Act WA 1996.
Specialty: Pilbara Institute - Karratha is famous for providing a number of learning options for students who don’t want to pursue a full time course per se. These are the kind of courses that Pilbara offers:
Full Time: The traditional way of doing it. It requires 221 hours per semester or a total of 13 hours per week.
Part Time: Any kind of enrolment that requires a student to be present for less than 13 hours a week, in any course.
Traditional Learning: Students attend ‘face-to-face’ classes that are pre-scheduled.
Flexible Learning: Students who are working or who may have time management issues can opt for this as they are required to complete their studies at home, work or by using the extensive facilities provided to them at Pilbara campuses. He/she may use a number of methods to complete his/her studies including self paced resources, workshops, tutorials, video conferencing etc or a combination of these methods.
Online Learning: A subset of Flexible Learning, this option does not require classroom attendance. This is available in selected areas and classes can be completed/accessed through the Internet
.
Faculty: The staff of Pilbara Institute - Karratha travels throughout the region and delivers training hands-on to the Aboriginal communities and students. Seeing as some of these communities are located in very remote areas including the Great Sandy Desert and Canning Stock Route, reaching out to people is the main concern. Adding to the remoteness of these areas, the weather in this region is also an active adversary. With the tropical weather conditions causing frequent cyclones and floods, the temperatures soaring up to 40 to 50 and the inhospitable terrain, it is no mean task getting to the places where these communities are located. But then again, since getting the people to the training is not possible, getting the training to people is one of the factors that will work out to the benefit of the Institute and also society.
Accreditation: Pilbara Institute (formerly known as Pilbara TAFE) is funded by the Government and is accredited by the Western Australian Training Accreditation Council (WA TAC) under Section 27(1) of the Vocational Education and Training Act WA 1996.
