Swami Keshwanand, after whom the RAU has been renamed as Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner vide Gazette notification No. F. 4 (2) vidhi/ 2/ 2009 dated June 09, 2009, was born at the village Magloona in Sikar district of present-day Rajasthan in the year 1883. His actual name was Birama. The famine of 1899 forced the 16-year-old Birama to leave the desert region and move to Punjab in search of livelihood. Driven by an ineffable spiritual quest, he became a sanyasi in 1904 and was inducted into the Udasin sec. He commenced his education at the Sadhu Ashram Fazilka. He learned the Hindi and Sanskrit languages and the Devanagari and Gurmukhi scripts at the Ashram. At the Kumbha Mela held at Prayag in 1905, Mahatma Hiranandji Avadhut conferred on Birama the new name "Swami Keshwanand".
The Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner , formerly a part of the Sukhadia University, Udaipur, became a separate entity on Ist of August 1987 as a consequence of promulgation of an Ordinance (Ordinance No. 13 of 1987) by the Government of Rajasthan which was later enacted by an Act of Rajasthan State Legislation (Act No. 39 of 1987). Based on the pattern of land-grant system, the University proposes to bring about more efficient and increased agricultural production including Animal Husbandry sector through a coordinated system of agricultural education, research and extension education. The University is expected to play a very vital role in the development of Agriculture and Animal husbandry, Home Science and Agricultural Engineering aspects and in improving the general economic conditions of the farmers of the state.
The Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner aims to carry out production-oriented research programs, rural mass education and adoption and propagation of new technologies throughout the state.It was Swami Keshwanand’s long time endeavour to eradicate social evils like untouchability, illiteracy, child marriage, indebtedness, poverty, backwardness, alcohol abuse, moral dissipation etc. Swami Keshwanand’s deep understanding of the rural society of the desert region can be gleaned from his book “Maru Bhumi Seva Karya”. In this book, he has explained the peculiarities of the Desert region, identified the problems and suggested rational and feasible solutions.
Swamiji was great supporter of girls’ education. He started a girl school viz; Gramothan Vidyapeath in Sangriya on August 09, 1917. Today, Sangriya is one of the important hub of the educational activities of Rajasthan and India and is studded with colleges and schools viz; Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner , Swami Keshwanand Memorial Public School, Gramothan Vidyapeath’s schools/ colleges viz; Home Science Women's College, College of Education, Higher Secondary School, Girls Higher Secondary School, Primary Girls School, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and Sir Chhotu Ram Museum.Swamiji was a member of the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms (1952-58 and 1958-64). Government of India, issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honour on August 15, 1999. The luminous soul of Swami Keshwanand left for heavenly abode on September 13, 1972.Associated with the name of Swamiji, Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner pays tribute to this great educational, social and spiritual personality and reaffirms its commitment to the cause of education for rural upliftment that was so coveted and pursued by the great soul.
The Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner scientists have contributed immensely by evolving many high yield potential varieties of crops which have become popular even in other states. Some of the important varieties/hybrids developed during the last two years include RMO 225 of Mothbean, Ganga 8 and RMG 344 of Mungbean, RC 101 of Cowpea, RD 2552 of Barley, RT 127 of Seseame and HNG 10 of Groundnut.
Agricultural technology in other fields, namely, crop production and protection, arid horticulture and soil science has also been developed to the farmers' benefit and to boost agricultural production. This has helped in keeping pace with the ever increasing demand of food grain production to match the population pressure. Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner also undertakes breeder seed production to contribute towards production of certified seed of improved varieties of crops to meet the farmers' demand for seed. Towards this end, production programme for truthfully labelled seed is also being carried out. Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner scientists have been praised for their endeavour of making truthfully labelled seed available to the farmers. The activity is gaining multiplier effect to benefit farmers of the State.
A number of All India Co-ordinated Projects are operating at the seven Agricultural Research Stations under Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner . The major emphasis under these projects is on development of high yielding varieties having resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, several research projects focussed on natural resource management and improving yield ceilings in crops have been sanctioned under the National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) of the ICAR and are operating at different research stations.
Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University - SKRAU Bikaner has also undertaken collaborative research projects with international institutes and organizations like International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad and ACIAR (Australian Council for International Agricultural Research), Australia. A research project on white grub in collaboration with ACIAR, Australia is operating at ARS, Durgapura. Another research project on drought resistance in groundnut under ACIAR-ICRISAT collaboration is also operating at ARS, Durgapura.
