All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS was established in 1956, and was built with a grant from the Government of New Zealand.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS was established in New Delhi after former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's intitial proposal to set up the institute in Calcutta was turned down by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences the vision of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the first Health Minister of India, to establish an institute of such nature in India. She envisioned an autonomous medical institute where students, doctors and teachers would live and learn side by side, with freedom to experiment with teaching and curriculum .
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS is located in Ansari Nagar in south Delhi. It is adjacent to the South Extension-II market, and lies on the south-eastern quadrant of Aurbindo Marg and Inner Ring Road crossing. Across AIIMS is Safdarjung Hospital and associated Vardhman Mahavir Medical College of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University). Also, adjacently lies the headquarters of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the body that coordinates and funds medical research in India.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS is a residential university where the faculty members, staff and students live on either the main campus or one of the several campuses which form a part of the Institution. There are five hostels for men undergraduate students and a single hostel available for women undergraduate students .These six hostels together can accommodate 850 students. For Post-graduate students, there are three hostels available for the men students and married couples and a single hostel for the women students
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS additional hostels for Nursing students and Post-graduate students are available at a facility in the Masjid Moth area, situated near to the main AIIMS campus. Hostels for MBBS/ MD / nursing students are also located at Ballabgarh, Dayalpur and Chainsa used during Ballabgarh posting. AIIMS Citizen's Charter doctors & staff at AIIMS strive to provide comprehensive, high quality tertiary care services including specialty and super-specialty services to all without consideration of caste, creed, religion, sex, economic status or disability. However, there may be some deficiencies due to extreme patient load and finite resources. Computer Facility was created in the institute in 1978 as unit in the Department of Biophysics. At the point, computerization was on a small scale and was catering only to Biophysics. In 1987, the
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS decided to augment the facility and Computer Facility was created and became operational in full scale in Jan'1989. This facility is engaged in teaching, research, thesis guidance and computerization of patient care activities. The information needs of the faculty, students and research workers are met by the library which came into existence in 1957 and grew parallel to the development of the Institute. Originally accommodated on the ground floor of the pre-clinical block, this library was shifted to its present premises in 1973 and was named as B.B. Dikshit Library after the name of the founder director of the Institute.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS Library building consists of two floors with a carpet area of 27000 square feet and seating capacity of 300 persons. Because of the unique contribution made by Dr. John F. Fulton, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Maj. Gen. Amir Chand and AIIMSONIANS of America, four different sections of the library have been named after them. For the benefit of the undergraduate medical students, a benevolent donation made by a philanthropist has made possible the setting of a Book Bank. Since August, 2003 the library remains open round the clock, seven days a week including Sundays and holidays except national holidays. Its present collection consists of 71,496 books, 66496 bound journals, 5059 thesis and 16805 pamphlets.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences-AIIMS library is currently subscribed to 633 journals. The Central Workshop was established at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1964,to promote World Class Biomedical Equipments for repair and maintenance in India, under Colombo Plan by the Australian Govt. The training was given to the Central Workshop staff in Australia. Apart from the routine work of repair and fabrication of different requirements, the Central Workshop was also assigned WHO Project India 0199 to train technicians for medical equipment’s maintenance under the project of CWS through WHO & UNICEF. Central Workshop has trained 206 trainees from different State Hospitals in India and the under developed countries in South East Asia such as Srilanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Burma.

It also offers superspeciality courses in a large number of medical and surgical disciplines.
