Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER establish in 1823 when a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery" was established by French government. In November 1956 the Government of India took over the medical college in the wake of the ‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry.
Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER was upgraded as a Regional Centre and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964.Jawaharlal ainstitute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research which includes a tertiary care referral hospital is an Institution of National Importance (an autonomous body) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER campus is located in the western entrance of Pondicherry on the highway and spread over 195 acres of sloping land that is a hillock, known in vernacular as ‘Gorimedu’.
Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMERis self sufficient in many ways and contains well laid roads, green trees & plants apart from Post-Office, Bank, Shopping centre, Hostels, and Residential complex .The staff strength of the institute is about 3000. The teaching faculty consists of 300 experienced teachers and 565 resident doctors. The total budget allocation for the year 2000-08 was Rs.155.24 crores, and Rs.160.76 crores for 2008-09.
The Library at awaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER, Pondicherry started functioning at the erstwhile Medical College Buildings at Pondicherry from 1957. It was shifted to the Banting Hall, JIPMER in the year 1964. The Central Library was finally shifted to the present centrally air-conditioned building and started functioning from January 12, 1973. It has the following sections: Book section cum main reading hall with a reading capacity of 175 readers, Xeroxing Section adjacent to the main reading hall, Current journals section where latest journals are displayed in the first floor of the library, Internet Section in the first floor, Bound volume section in the basement of the library.
Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses. Admission to the courses are made on all India basis and strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations.
Jawaharlal Institute of Posgraduate Medical Education and Research-JIPMER is also active in research in various fields of modern medicine & health and medical education. A research council at institute level looks after the research activities and there is a scientific society which provides forum for presentation of the research work. A number of conferences, workshops, seminars and training courses are conducted by the institute every year. Funds for research come from mural and extramural sources like ICMR, UGC, DBT, WHO, etc. A number of research papers are published by residents and faculty staff every year in journals of national and international repute. Also quite frequently a number of awards and fellowships are won by the faculty. Some important national Journals like Biomedicine (an International Journal of Biomedical Sciences) is published from JIPMER. Many text books have been authored by the faculty members .
