Establishment: Cape Breton University - CBU Sydney traces its roots to 1951 when the St. Francis Xavier University Sydney Campus was opened as a satellite campus of St. Francis Xavier University. Also referred to informally as "St. Francis Xavier Junior College" or "Xavier Junior College" (XJC) and colloquially as "Little X", the St. Francis Xavier University Sydney Campus was situated in Sydney's central business district and saw several buildings opened as a result of growth during its first decade of operation.The Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology (NSEIT) opened in 1968 on Grand Lake Road (Trunk 4) several kilometres east of the Sydney city limits. With assistance from the Cape Breton Development Corporation, St. Francis Xavier University Sydney Campus and NSEIT were merged into the College of Cape Breton (CCB) in June 1974.In 1980, the former NSEIT campus on Grand Lake Road was expanded as the institution consolidated at this location. The Government of Nova Scotia granted CCB a charter for granting university degrees in 1982 which saw the institution rename itself as the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB).

Mission: To provide leadership and employ partnerships that assists learners and their communities to meet their educational, cultural, and economic needs.
Campus: The campus includes the hall of residence, a fully equipped gym, a cafeteria, and library spread across a wide area. Counseling services are available on the campus as well. Health services, financial aid guidance, writing development support, disability needs and concerns and assistance for international students is provided.
Study Centre: The study center offers an academically conducive environment suited for the all round growth and development of a student.
Hostel: There are three options for residence at Cape Breton University:
Harriss Hall: 111 single rooms, with a mix of private and shared washroom facilities are available. It contains a 300 seat dining hall and central mail room that services all on-campus students. There is also evening security on site. Residence is co-ed; however it is reserved for students in their second year or higher. Living room area having a flat screen TV and fireplace, shelving for books and games and assortment of menu choices. It employs environment friendly techniques.
MacDonald Residence: The essential features are traditional dorm style living, co-ed, rooms are fully furnished and include cable and internet hook-up.
Cabot Residence: 31 unit, 123 bedroom apartment style living space, Four bedrooms and two bathrooms, a shared living room/lounge area and kitchen.
Faculty: The faculty are trained and well established in their fields. They not only inform students but also educate them about various career fields and practices. The faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for accomplishments from academic brilliance to athletic expertise. The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) announced a collective decision in favour of the accreditation of Cape Breton University’s Bachelor of Science in nursing program.
