The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi traces back its development to an idea floated in 1963. The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi is a management school located at Vishwakarma Bhavan, which is in the institute's premises. It gradually came to life in 1974 when IIT Delhi set up an internal committee to scrutinize the functioning of the management area in the institute. In 1975, an expert committee was setup to formally examine the possibility of launching this area in a more sustained fashion. The result was an M.Tech programme in "Management Systems" in the School for System Studies, (subsequently renamed School for Systems and Management Studies). The year 1978 saw the setting up of the Management Core Group and the core inputs to a full time Management Education at IIT Delhi were reconfirmed by an Advisory Committee constituted by the representatives of the Academia and the industry. Since then, there has been no looking back. Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi for Systems and Management Studies became the Centre for Systems and Management Studies. This was subsequently renamed as the Centre for Management Studies.

Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi - Mission - Through effective research, education extension activities and teaching, we constantly seek to strengthen the ongoing processes of management and extend the frontiers of management knowledge. In doing so, we would endeavour to consolidate the creative bridges between the traditions of management thought in India and the global management thinking. To achieve the above, we at Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi, nurture committed faculty and dedicated staff, and make available world class scholastic infrastructure in a highly supportive learning environment to our students and client groups.


The faculty of the Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi has been invited to various international activities and assignments in over two dozen countries ranging from Canada to Australia and from Japan to Mexico. The faculty has received prestigious fellowships from the Royal Asiatic Society London, ARTDO International Manila, All India Management Association Delhi, Indian Society for Training & Development Delhi and other major national and international professional associations. Several faculty members of the Department have received awards for their papers, books and other contributions to the profession and industry.


The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi has undertaken consultancy work on behalf of Government Departments such as Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology and Department of Rural Development etc. It has provided consultancy support to various service and manufacturing sector industries and co-operatives besides consulting for international organisation like the U.S. Air Force. It has also provided professional inputs to voluntary professional associations such as Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), All India Management Association (AIMA), Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD), IFTDO and ARTDO International etc.


The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi has 5 fully air-conditioned Wi-Fi enabled lecture theaters with modern audio visual aids, an auditorium with a capacity to seat more than 180 people, syndicate rooms, a library, conference hall for round table conferences, cafeteria, and computing facilities. The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi provides hostel facility for all its students within the campus and the entire campus is networked through optical fiber line. IITD provides state of art infrastructure for MBA in the Vishwakarma Bhavan, with excellent superior acoustics and facilities for visual presentations, giving DMS a corporate outlook.


Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi offers excellent opportunities, covering a very wide range, to its students to participate in recreational and creative activities. Students interested in drama, music or indoor games can join the Dramatics Club, Music Club or Indoor Sports Club. Students who wish to pursue hobbies can find creative expression for their interests by participation in Photography Society, Fine Arts Society, Hobbies Society and Publicity Cell. Opportunities for literacy expression are offered by English Debating and Literacy Club, Hindi Samiti and Quizzing Club. The Film Series Committee organises regular shows of feature films whereas the Lecture Series Committee organizes lectures by eminent persons on topics of student's interests. Generally, the activities organised include inter-house and inter-college competitions. An annual inter-college cultural festival "Rendezvous" is organised to encourage interaction between various colleges and to promote competitions of high standard.


Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi has a hospital centrally situated in the campus. It provides facilities for OPD treatment and admissions. It has a Pathology Lab. providing facilities for blood, urine, stool examination and biochemical tests, equipped with a semi-auto analyser. The X-ray Department undertakes routine radiography. There is a Physiotherapy Unit with modern equipments. The Dental Unit provides dental facilities by dental surgeon and technician. It has separate dental X-ray machine. The Elcectrocardiogram ( ECG) facility is also available. A small Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been started with bed side ECG monitor, Cardiac defibrillator etc. Nebuliser for aerosol therapy is available in emergency for patients who come in acute attack of Bronchial Asthma.


The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi currently runs a two year full time MBA programme with focus on Management Systems, a two year full time MBA with focus on Telecommunication Systems Management under the aegis of Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management and a three year part time MBA programme with focus on Technology Management. Apart from the specialised compulsory courses in the focus area, the students have choice for functional area specialization in finance, marketing, operations, information technology, HR etc.


The Department of Management Studies – DMS IIT Delhi has made contributions to the developmental activities of companies such as HTA, Arthur Anderson, Dubai Port Authority, Malaysian Institute of Insurance, Indian Petro-Chemicals Limited (IPCL) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Its expertise has been sought in Germany, France, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, UAE etc.
