The Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri is established on March 29, 1968 and subsequently named as Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri after a great social reformer "Mahatma Jyotiba Phule". It has started functioning from October, 1969 at Rahuri, District Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. The Campus is situated 160 km from Pune on Pune-Delhi highway in Ahmednagar district. Forty kilometer in the South is Ahmednagar town and 50 km in the North is Shirdi, famous for the saint Saibaba. Newasa, land of saint Dnyaneshwar is 33 km from Rahuri. The campus is 10 km from Rahuri Railway Station and 110 km from manmade railway junction. Ahmednagar is a historical place and was a capital of the Nizam rulers. It is famous for co-operative sugar and dairy industries. The annual average maximum and minimum temperature ranges between 30 to 40 0C and 10 to 20 0C. Respectively.
The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri is a statutory body of the Government of Maharashtra. It is headed by the Vice-Chancellor who is appointed by the Hon. Chancellor of the State. The minister for Agriculture is a pro chancellor of the University. The Maharashtra Council Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER) is established to co-ordinate the smooth functioning of four agricultural universities in the State. The council has its head quarter at Pune. It consists of eminent scientists, administrator and legislators. The Executive committee appointed by the State is an apex governing body and the main decision making authority of the University which is headed by the Vice Chancellor. It consists of eminent agricultural scientists, educators, legislators and representatives of farmers. It is assisted by the Academic Council, faculty council meeting, Board of Studies of respective disciplines, Agricultural Research Council and Extension Education Council.
Initially only one faculty was established in Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri. Later on however, faculties of Agricultural Engineering (1969) and Veterinary Science (1988) were established. There are three agricultural colleges at Pune, Dhule and Kolhapur for under graduate programme, and post graduate programmes are being offered at Post Graduate Institute, Rahuri and at College of Agriculture, Pune.

The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri Library remains open from 8.00 am to 11.00 pm on all working days, from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon on second Saturday, fourth Saturday and Sunday and remains closed on public holidays. University Library caters to the needs of all the staff and students of Post-Graduate Institute, College of Agricultural Engineering and School of Baking situated at Central Campus, Rahuri. In addition, the library caters to the needs of scientists working at the various research stations of the University by way of extending facilities of inter library load system.

The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri Library is having LAN connectivity with one 16 port independent hub connected to the main server of the University. Presently the Library is having two Pentium series computers with CD-ROM, INTERNET and E-MAIL facility. One LEXMARK Opera 1250 Laser printer and one WIPRO 1050+ DM Printer are also available. INTERNET and E-MAIL facility is provided to the students and staff. Computerization of University Library services is in progress.
Research is one of the important activities of the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth - MPKV Rahuri. The research programme is organized through 4 main research stations and 21 sub-stations located throughout the jurisdiction of the University. There are 172 research projects funded through ICAR, Govt. of India, State Govt. and other funding agencies in the country and abroad. The operational area of the University is divided into five zones on the basis of agro-climatic conditions. To strengthen the location specific research programmes, the ICAR has sanctioned National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) for these zones viz., I) Scarcity zone, ii) Plain zone iii) Sub-montage zone iv) Ghats zone and v) Assured rainfall zone.
