The Dravidian University – Kuppam was founded on October 20, 1997 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through a Legislature Act at Kuppam, a tri-lingual junction in the south-western part of Andhra Pradesh with the initial support extended by the governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala for an integrated development of Dravidian languages, literatures thus paving way for cultural and emotional integration of all the regions that carry forward the ancient historical torch of the nation. Dravidian University – Kuppam, which formally came into existence in 1997, began functioning with two departments in 1998, has today grown into a strong institution of 21 Academic Departments and 7 Research Centres. Located in a sylvan scene, pollution-free and aesthetically appealing, Srinivasavanam, the campus, presents a traditional picture of a Gurukulam in 21st Century, blending tradition and modernity harmoniously. The sole objective of the Dravidian University – Kuppam is to inculcate the spirit of national integration. Its tools are research, lectures, translation and publications.
The Andhra Pradesh Government gifted a vast land of 1093 acres for the Dravidian University – Kuppam under the leadership of Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy. Successive Chief Ministers Sri N Chandra Babu Naidu and Sri Y S Rajasekhara Reddy saw to the University growing from strength to strength.
Dravidian University – Kuppam which had functioned with only 5 Departments, 3 P.G and 5 U.G. courses upto 2004 has in 2006 obtained U.G.C. 12B recognition for grants with the successful starting of five more Departments in addition to 6 courses under self financing scheme. The budget too looked up from 2.8 crores to 6 crores. The 21st Century Gurukulam was another feather in the cap. An extra 3 crores were spent on new buildings. Separate hostels for men and women students too came up.
Dravidian University – Kuppam has a well-equipped modern computer laboratory with 70 systems to cater to the needs of the students of Computer Science. Internet connectivity is available round the clock. Established in the Dravidian University – Kuppam the centre provides access to the world of knowledge to the students.
Dravidian University – Kuppam has two well-equipped modern computer laboratories. IPSTAR 256 kbps VSAT internet connectivity is available round the clock; besides a separate Lab for Bio-Informatics and Biotechnology. There are separate Hostels for Boys and Girls on the Dravidian University – Kuppam Campus.
Dravidian University – Kuppam aims at providing opportunity to students who want to learn about the Dravidian languages, literature, culture, medicine, modern sciences, engineering, technology and allied subjects. The university is a good addition to the educational society for the purpose of enlightenment around Dravidian culture. For the fulfillment of this purpose, Dravidian University – Kuppam translates books of other languages in Dravidian languages and books written originally in Dravidian languages in other languages. This is done so that knowledge can flow without any hurdle.
Dravidian University – Kuppam is the first in the state of Andhra Pradesh to start 5 year Integrated Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Soft Skills Enhancement Training (ASSET) such as Communication, Computer, Analytical, Personality Development, and Career Perspectives are an additional part of CBCS. Dravidian University – Kuppam has also developed a new educational program known as the 21st Century Gurukulam (21CG), which is envisioned as a self-sustaining community, modeled after the ancient Gurukulam. The purpose of 21CG is to provide remedial education and IT training leading to a postgraduate degree in IT. Dravidian University – Kuppam Admissions are conducted in the month of May through Entrance Texts. The entrance tests are conducted at Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Kuppam, Krishnagiri, Kolar, Chittoor, Madanapalle, and Nellore.
