Government Autonomous Post Graduate College – Chhindwara was established by the government as 'Pandit Motilal Nehru Arts, Science and Commerce College' in the year 1961-62. In 1969-70, college was categorized as 'post graduate college' and the name was changed to 'Government Post Graduate College Chhindwara M P'. In 1993, University Grant Commission categorized Government Autonomous Post Graduate College – Chhindwara as an "Autonomous College". The autonomous cell is performing all the functions as stated in the autonomous plan like the formations of rules and regulations, and formation of the syllabus, mid-term examination management of annual examination and all work related to continuous evaluation in a systematic manner.
Since April 1999, the Department of Higher Education has declared Government Autonomous Post Graduate College – Chhindwara as the leading college of the district. According to the established rules in the aforesaid plan, this college is working as an important link for the district administration. Besides this the college is managing and controlling the administrative activities of eleven government and four non government colleges according to the directions laid down by the government. Government Autonomous Post Graduate College – Chhindwara offers different kind of career oriented and computer courses.
