Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur was established in the year 1909. Earlier it was known as Government Technical School. It was rechristened into Government Polytechnic in year 1958. Mr. A. Lindon, the founder Principal of Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur nurtured/served this institution till 1921. Institutions and organizations viz. Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur, Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur and Doordarshan Kendra Gorakhpur were launched / initiated in the Campus/Buildings of Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur. A Building block is still known as Malviya Block in the Institute.
Presently Mahamaya Polytechnic of Information and Technology Gorakhpur is running in our premises. The area of this institution is about 28.8 acres. Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur was awarded for its proficiency and excellence in the year 2008 by the Board of Technical Education Uttar Pradesh for its students who have secured merit positions in the State for three consecutive years. Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur organizes seminars and events for the entrepreneurship development from time to time. The institution organizes campus interviews for the placement of students. More than 70 students have been selected in different Industrial organization like Larsen & Tubro, Simplex infrastructure, Shriram Pistons, Hindustan Lever Ltd., Chambal Fertilizers, Telco and Bajaj Auto Ltd. etc. Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur provides Diploma program to the college students.

A jeep is attached to Training & Placement Officer to keep interaction with industries for the placement of students. Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur is fully equipped with latest Machinery & Equipments to train the students to face the challenge of Modern Industries and conduct all the experiments and practical exercises as per the curriculum of the courses being run at this institute.
In spite of the tough and demanding curriculum, sports and extra-curricular activities are carried out as a regular feature in this Institute and students of Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur participate and perform well in the state level cultural and sport competitions e.g. Youth festival, Inter-Polytechnic Athletic Meets and the state level tournaments of various games and other literary activities like Quiz-contest, & Declamation Contest etc.
Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur has also the scheme of N.S.S (National Service Scheme). Various activities are carried out by the volunteers of this scheme, which include blood donation camps, tree plantation etc. Latest achievement of Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur is the first position in Inter – Polytechnic Table Tennis tournament held at G.P Sonepat in Sep 2006. And second position in Inter – Polytechnic Volley ball (shooting) held at G.P Nilokheri in Sep 2006.
Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur provides different facilities. A comprehensive annual program of all academic and extra curriculum activities is prepared in the beginning of session. This is known as calendar of Activities. This include all National Festival, Quiz Contest, Paper Reading contest, Declamation contest, Blood Donation Camp, Tree plantation Camp, Sports Events, Short Industries visit, Long Industrial visit, Quest lectures etc. There are various clubs in Government Polytechnic - Gorakhpur which provide ample opportunities to the students to develop into a complete human being.
