Hooghly Mohsin College was established on 1st August, 1836 in Peron’s house, the most magnificent on the banks of the river. College is one of the premier academic institutions not only in West Bengal but also in India, promoting the cause of higher education for more than one hundred and sixty years opened on 1st August 1836 in Peron’s house, a magnificent piece of architecture overlooking the great river.
The great man, Haji Mohammad Mohsin whose learning, piety and philanthropy have kept him alive in people’s memory, was born at Hooghly in 1730 and died in 1816. He used his riches entirely in charity, one example of which is this College. Initially it was named the New Hooghly College and on the centenary celebration it became Hooghly Mohsin College . It became affiliated to University of Calcutta since the latter’s initiation in 1857 and after the establishment of the University of Burdwan in 1960 the college became its constituent college.
Hooghly Mohsin College deserves to be declared ‘a college with potential for excellence (CPE)’. The past and the present academic records and achievements of the college as well as its contribution to greater social and national life emphatically espouse this demand. Accordingly, the college authority has already sent its proposal to the U.G.C. to that effect. Moreover, the Hooghly Mohsin College as such and particularly its post-graduate departments require academic autonomy to fulfill its mission of achieving academic excellence. It is hoped that the Government of West Bengal would come forward to help granting academic autonomy to the college. The college is constantly aware of the need to maintain the high level of academic excellence, which it has already attained.
Hooghly Mohsin College started its journey for excellence in higher education in 1836. The history of this college warrants the hope and mission of continuing to spread modern, western as well as oriental education and inculcate humane values amongst the students. To match with its mission, since the very beginning the institution has been emphasizing the quality of education imparted and the elegance and excellence of teaching style. Though Western education had received importance in the past yet indigenous traditions and values were not neglected even then. Consequently, students of New Hooghly Mohsin College made significant contributions to academic excellence as well as to the cause of social needs of the country.

This is borne out by the involvement and participation of the students and teachers of this college in revolutionary and social activities for national independence and regeneration. The introduction of full-fledged post-graduates courses in a number of subjects in the recent past amply proves this positive mission of the college - a mission which upholds heritage and tradition with modernity.

Separate departmental libraries for each subject other than central Library along with facilities of Xerox, internet, book bank, reading room etc. The college has got a well equipped department dedicated to Sports & Physical Education. College has 101846 square feet area for playground which is made for Major games like Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton; Minor games such as Kho Kho, Kabadi, Athletics and indoor games - Table Tennis, Carrom, Chess. Two hostels has been setup within the Hooghly Mohsin College campus having with the capacity of 69 students. College offers different kind of courses leading to Bachelor, Master courses leading to Arts, Commerce and Science stream with various specializations.
