Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior was established in the year 1964 under a government ordinance passed by the ruling president of India Dr. Sarwapalli Radhakrishanan. He laid the foundation for this college on 11th December, 1964. This University since its days of inception has operated as an affiliating University as well as a residential University. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is also offering long distance learning courses to its students now. In the year 1966, the university started offering post graduate courses. The current vice chancellor of the university is Prof. A.K Kapoor.
Under its wing, the Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior has different affiliated colleges numbering higher than 100 which offer under graduate and post graduate courses. The various fields catered by this University are science, social science, commerce and management, physical education, life science and arts. J Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is spread over a distance of six territories in Madhya Pradesh which are Bhind, Morena, Gwalior, Shivpuri, Guna and Datia. Initially, Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior was offering education in 29 affiliated colleges only. Some of the colleges of University are now operating as full-fledged research centers. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is also providing foreign language courses in French, German, English, and Russian recently added in 1986.
Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior started with a status of a residential and an affiliating University. The territorial jurisdiction of the affiliation extends to six districts of Gwalior and Chambal Division, viz., Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Guna, Shivpuri and Datia. To begin with, Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior had a total of 29 affiliated colleges. Those have steadily increased to more than 100 colleges. Till date of 26 Government and 7 non-Government colleges impart teaching up to postgraduate level. Some of the colleges have also developed into recognized research centers.

Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior started post-graduate teaching and research from the session 1966-67 with the establishment of Schools of Studies in Botany and Zoology. The Schools of Studies in Physics, Chemistry and Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology were started from the session 1969-70. The School of Studies in Economics and Mathematics came into existence from the session 1978-79, which the School of Studies in Commerce started from the session 1980-81 and that of Biochemistry from the session 1986-87. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior also started MBA course under the School of studies in Commerce from the session 1987, during the VII plan period the School of Studies in Library and Information Science was established in 1986. Under the VIII plan development programme University has established School of Studies in Earth Science in 1991.
The School of Studies in Economic, Mathematics and Commerce are recent additions to Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior campus. The Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior has also offers courses on Bio- Chemistry, Bio- technology, Environmental Science and Earth Science to the interested students. The Institute of Management provides degree on Masters of Business Administration Programme.
Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior science and Instrumentation Center extends facilities for fabrication and maintenance of laboratory instruments of School of Studies and affiliated colleges. M.P. Council of Science & Technology, Bhopal has established a local cell to coordinate and monitor various research projects and other scientific activities under the scheme.
Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior central Library has a collection of over 1,40,000 books and about 8000 bound volumes of research journals. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior also contains a section of unpublished theses. Presently more than 142 Indian and Foreign journals are being subscribed. The Library also contains Internet access, microfilm reader, 16-mm projector, and a number of films on various subjects. Beside Central library, each School of Studies has a library, well equipped with books and journals, useful for advanced study.
A great facility offered by Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is the Mahadji Scindia Sports Complex. There are many features of this sports complex which are basketball courts, kho-kho ground, tennis courts, kabaddi ground, four volleyball squares and one indoor lobby for Badminton, Aerobic, Table Tennis, Judo, Weight Lifting and Wrestling. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is also a grassy track of 400 m for conducting athletic activities. A hockey ground, cricket ground with turf and football ground are also present. This centre is coming up as a foremost sports area in the Gwalior region. Jiwaji University-JU Gwalior is also offering the services of a gym to its students known as the Madhav Rao Scindia Gymnasium. This gym has been recently started offering all modern facilities to the users. The sports complex also offers yoga classes and coaching camps to students in different areas of sports.
