Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science - KNPCOVS Satara, unique in its placement on a totally rural background, was established under the auspices of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri in the year 1988. With the establishment of MAFSU the institute was transferred under its control in the year 2001. The institute was basically established to cater to the needs of people in ten districts of Western Maharashtra region. This region of the state is rich in animal husbandry activities and surpasses the other regions of the state in almost all aspects of livestock and poultry industry viz. total livestock and poultry population, milk, meat and egg production. The college was named as Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science to honor the great freedom warrior Krantisinh Nana Patil who established a parallel government against the British regime called `PRATISARKAR` during the freedom struggle of India.

The place is well connected through the bus service of State Transport Corporation. The nearest railway station for Shirwal is Lonand (Pune-Kolhapur-Goa Route) located 27 Km distance from Shirwal. Subhanmangal Hostel accommodates all the boys while Krantijyoti Hostel provides accommodation to the entire girl students. Both the hostels have adequate facilities viz. Common Room with Television Set, Reading Room, Student’s Mess and sports facilities including Badminton Court, Table Tennis and Volley Ball court. An adequately equipped gymnasium consisting equipment required for maintenance of physical fitness is available freely for students and staff and is well utilized by them.
