Manipur University - MU Imphal came into existence on June 5, 1980. It is constituted under the Manipur University Act, 1980(Manipur Act No VIII of 1980). A successor to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Post-Graduate Centre since 1st April, 1981(the day the Centre was merged in the University), the University has its administrative headquarters and Post-Graduate classes and research in the premises of the erstwhile Post-Graduate Centre. It was converted into a Central University w.e.f. 13/10/2005. The Manipur University - MU Imphal Act No.54 of 2005 received the assent of the President on 28/12/2005. The University has jurisdiction all over the state of Manipur. The University campus is spread over an area of 287 acres in the historic Canchipur, the old palace of the kingdom of Manipur. The Langthabal Palace (Konung) was established by Maharaja Gambhir Singh in 1827(October) A.D. just after the liberation of Manipur from Burmese occupation. Maharaja Gambhir Singh took his last breath in Canchipur. Canchipur is also the birthplace of Dr. Lamabam Kamal, a renowned poet of Manipur. The University has 72 affiliated colleges and one constituent college i.e. Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT).

Manipur University - MU Imphal has a studies centre. The Centre for Manipur Studies was established as an area studies centre under the UGC sponsored scheme with the main objective of teaching and research in history, culture and languages etc. for promoting national integration and progress in a backward and sensitive region of the North Eastern India. The Centre has so far published 25(twenty-five) research works.

The Manipur University - MU Imphal has a well equipped Computer Centre. It mainly caters to the Computing requirements for the University like Payroll, P.F., Accounting, Income Tax, LIC, Examination processing, etc. It also helps students for their project and research work. From time to time it is also conducting short term Computer Courses for students and in service trainees. It also develops specialized software for the management of University and Government offices. Computer Centre is also looking after Campus Network, Website Maintenance and other Office Automation jobs for the University.

The Educational Multimedia Research Centre governs different educational programmes produced which are intended to upgrade, update and enrich the undergraduate syllabus. It is one of the seventeen such Media Centers attached to Manipur University - MU Imphal in the Country and the only Media Centre in the North Eastern States of India. The centre has got facilities for shooting, recording and editing of video programmes. The centre produces both outdoor and indoor video programmes. It has got a video library of master copies of the programmes produced by the centre and collection of other video programmes from other centers. It has got programme viewing facilities for students and teachers for the cultivation of audio-visual culture of education. The Centre has so far produced 115 ETV programmes since 1990 till now.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal, Library has a collection of more than 1, 20,000 books and subscribes to 280 national journals and 43 foreign journals as hard copies. The library has been identified as one of the member of UGC-INFONET and readers have been provided facilities for direct for direct access to e-journals. The entire collection of the library can be browsed through INTRANET within MU-campus. An intelligent searching mechanism of available document is also incorporated with the system. It is also a referral Library of the State. The present three-storied building has a total area of 900 square meters.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal, Ladies Hostel currently has the provision of accommodating 150 Students. The Manipur University, Ladies Hostel ensures that students belonging to different communities and coming from different and often far places have a safe and secured place to stay. It provides a conducive atmosphere for students to excel not only in academic pursuits but also in extra-curricular activities.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal, hostel currently provides accommodation to about 168 students. The hostel mess is run and managed by the boarder students who are assisted by about 11 staff members including 8 casual workers. By and large, the hostel provides hygienic food with reasonable quality at well affordable mess fee. The buses of the University ply between the Imphal City and the Campus. In addition, there are many regular transport systems linking the campus with other parts of the City and its suburbs.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal has a Guest House in its campus. The Guest House has, at present, 17 two-bedded rooms of which 6 rooms are at the ground floor while 11 rooms are at the first floor. The second floor is under construction. The room-tariff is Rs. 50/- per bed per day for official duty while the tariff is Rs. 100/-per bed per day in case of private guest. The charge for one vegetable-meal (lunch or dinner) is Rs. 35/- and one non-vegetable-meal (fish curry) is Rs.40/-. The charge of one breakfast is Rs. 15/-.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal Health Centre provides health care to the students, staff members, scholars, residents of the Campus and also to all the out-patients from the surrounding areas of the University Campus. It is headed by a Chief Medical Officer, a Resident Medical Officer (PT), one Dental Surgeon (PT), one staff nurse, one pharmacist-cum-typist and one peon. The main objective of the Health Centre is to provide health care to all to the extent possible. The Health Centre also provides medical attention and care during the University Week, Youth Festivals, Sports meets, NSS Camps, etc. The Centre also arranges yearly Pulse Polio immunization from time to time. The centre is getting specialist facilities for Eye, E.N.T. and Skin from Regional Institute of Medical Science, Imphal for two days in a month as an Urban Centre.
The Manipur University - MU Imphal Museum is multifunctional. It provides facilities to scholars to study the various aspects of prehistoric archaeology, palaeobotany, palaeoecology, paleozoology and other antiquities of the ancient past.
