National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore, formerly known as KREC, is a premier autonomous university along the western shores of India. It was founded in July 1960, as a joint venture between the Government of Karnataka and the Government of India, originally under the name Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal. National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore began in 1960, through the efforts of U. Srinivas Mallya and V.S.Kudva. The foundation stone was laid on August 6, 1960. KREC began with three under-graduate courses in engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil, with affiliation to the University of Mysore. 1965 saw the beginning of undergraduate courses in Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering.

National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore is located at National Highway 17, by the shores of Arabian Sea, Institute Surathkal is one of few universities in the world that boasts of a private beach, including a lighthouse. The campus is an idyllic spot covering an area of about 295 acres 1.19 km2 and is covered by lush green vegetation in many areas. The sylvan surroundings provide a lovely backdrop for serious academic pursuit and relaxation.

National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore is a residential engineering college; hence all attending students are required to enroll for hostel accommodation. Students from adjoining areas commute from home, however, with a permission from the institution. Separate hostels are provided for girl's accommodation.There are 12 hostel blocks in all - 10 for under-graduate boys, 1 for post-graduates and 1 for girls. Construction of a new mega hostel block for boys with 3 towers spanning 7 floors each and housing over 1500 single rooms has been recently completed while a similar mega hostel complex for the women is going to start the construction phase soon. There are a total of about one thousand four hundred 1400 undergraduate students, three hundred and ten 310 postgraduate students and two hundred 200 women students. Hostel life forms the basis of social life at National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore, with parties, sports activities and other events taking place continuously, in parallel with academic rigour. Seniors are offered single room accommodation while juniors, sophomores and freshmen are required to live with roommates. The hostels are equipped with dining halls for the students; however these operate only at specific times of the day. The eight dining halls provide basic Indian cuisine, seven of them catering to the vegetarian needs of the populace and one that serves non-vegetarian dinner.

The suburb of Mangalore, National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore is about two kilometers south of the college along the NH - 17. The college lies in the Mangalore City Corporation's jurisdiction. The temple town of Udupi is 40 kilometers to the north along the NH - 17. Access to Institute is most convenient by buses from Mangalore City Bus Stand and Udupi. Express buses to NITK depart from these bus stands at regular intervals. The Surathkal railway station on the scenic Konkan Railway line is about 3 kilometers from the college. The Mangalore Airport at Bajpe is about 14 kilometers away, and is served by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Air Deccan for domestic passengers; Air India Express serves international destinations such as Sharia Dubai and Muscat. The Tourist spots near the institute include Mangalore, Udupi, Dharmasthala and Manipal. Udupi is famous for Udupi cuisine. Udupi and Dharmasthala also house famous temples Sri Krishna and Manjunatha, respectively. Sandy beaches close to the college include the campus beach, Paramour Beach, Kapu beach, the Murudeshwara beach and the St. Mary's Island near Malpe, Udupi.

In National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore, weekdays are spent in classrooms and labs, weekends are often spent indulging in various activities organized by the college clubs, leading to a healthy atmosphere of fun and work together, promoting the overall development of individuals at the institute. National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore also has very own linux users group, which actively promotes free and open source linux technology.The Institute Music Club organizes music shows and play popular music at the outdoor auditoriums. A variety of musical styles are on display at these events, from Indian classical music to fusion to rock, in keeping with the varied tastes of students. Once a week, the Films Club plays a movie at the Student's Activity Centre. Apart from popular English and Hindi releases, a number of regional films are also showcased. These events are popular among students, as well as faculty. The Mangalore chapter of the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youth is centered at National Institute of Technology. It organizes concerts and lecture-demonstrations by prominent masters of Indian classical art-forms and strives to raise awareness of Indian culture in the surrounding regions through lectures, orientations and conventions.

National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore offers further under-graduate engineering courses were added: Electronics and Communication, Mining, Computer Science 1986 and Information Technology. Institute Surathkal was ranked the 11th best, 8th best 2006 and 11th best in 2009 in the country by India Today a popular weekly magazine. In another ranking by NASSCOM, IDC and Dataquest Magazine the college was ranked 3rd best for placements in India with an overall ranking of 11.In 2009 the school was ranked 9th overall amongst the best tech schools in India. In its recent survey Times of India has ranked Institute at the tenth position overall and ninth in terms of government institute in the country for engineering. The college is known for its good faculty and facilities for research. KREC came into the jurisdiction of Mangalore University when it was started in 1980. All the under-graduate courses were converted to four year terms.

The Photography Club captures photos of events happening in National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore. It promotes photography as a hobby among the young engineers. It conducts "Expose" ,which is a National level photography contest organised yearly during INCIDENT - the annual cultural fest. The club plays an important role in bringing out the official yearbook, "The Vitruvian". There is also an amateur astronomy club - Star Gazing Club, which conducts many night shows for the students and the faculty of the campus. Also appreciative are its efforts to spread astronomy across the region in the form of various workshops for the school students in the region. The Quiz Club of National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore is one of the best in the country, having produced several quizzers of outstanding calibre who have participated in and won competitions all over the country. The excellent sports facilities on campus provide students the opportunity to hone their skills, and Institute boasts several fine sports teams that participate in events all over the country. The Press Club of Institute brings out a fortnightly wall magazine 'News Wagon', providing a tongue-in-cheek look at life around the campus, besides bringing out the official yearbook, "The Vitruvian".

Normally the placements cell of National Institute of Technology - NIT Mangalore commence in the beginning of the final year i.e. in the month of July. Prior to this, an invitation is sent to all previous recruiters in the month of May. Along with the invitation a form is provided seeking the company profile & information. After getting the willingness from the companies, they are prioritized and a schedule is prepared. The date of visit is intimated to the companies in June. On the allotted day the company visits the campus, makes pre-placement talk, conducts tests and interviews and selects the candidates.
