St Teresas College – Ernakulam a pioneering institution in the field of Higher Education in India, was established on 15th June in the year 1925, as the first Women's College of the erstwhile Cochin State and the second in the whole of Kerala by the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of St.Teresa. It started functioning in one of the large halls of St.Teresa's High School with Sr.Beatrice as its first Principal and Mother Veronica as the first Manager and a student strength of just 41. While high academic standards were maintained in the college from the very start, students were also taught the value and dignity of labour, good social relationship and above all, lasting spiritual values through regular moral and religious instruction classes.
In the beginning, St Teresas College – Ernakulam was a second grade Arts College affiliated to the Madras University and offered the Intermediate Course with Ancient History, Modern History and Logic under Part Ill. The construction of a separate building for the College was completed in 1926 and the classes were shifted from the High School to this new building the same year. The first batch of students appeared for the University examination in 1927 and came out with excellent results. Fully satisfied by the high standards maintained by the college, the Madras University was pleased to upgrade the College to the status of a First Grade College in 1927. St Teresas College – Ernakulam offers different kind of undergraduate, postgraduate, self-financing, vocational, add-on and IGNOU courses.
St Teresas College – Ernakulam is situated at Park Avenue Road,Near Govt. Guest House, Ernakulam, Kerala. It is located in the heart of Kochi city in two different locations separated by a distance of roughly half a kilometre. St Teresas College – Ernakulam library is the key resource of information for the academic community. It started functioning along with the college itself in 1925. First it was named 'Mother Veronica Library' dedicated to the fond memory of Mother Veronica, the superior General of the Congregation. The present Library was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the College in 1975. The formal inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Library was in 1981. At present there are 72,855 books and 195 periodicals. Special sections are maintained for Career guidance, Value education, Gandhian Studies and Kerala History. For convenience, department libraries for Science subjects are maintained in the Science Block. A general library wing is also functioning in the Science Block. Computer database and Internet facilities are available at the library. St Teresas College – Ernakulam Teresian Computer Centre offers courses of varying duration to provide efficient training in Computer Software Engineering. Students can choose either the morning (7.30- 8.45 a.m.) or the evening slot (3.00- 4.45 p.m.). The courses offered by the Women's Study.
In campus residence facilities are provided by St Teresas College – Ernakulam. There are three main hostels, one in the main block and the other two in the Science Block. The atmosphere in these residence halls gives a feeling of 'home away from home'. The application to these hostels may be given on the day of the admission itself. St Teresas College – Ernakulam also has a Sports hostel for student sportspersons. The hostel inmates are accommodated in rooms. Each hostel room can accommodate 3-4 inmates. The special features of the hostel include a recreation room, a library, Internet facility and a snack bar. There is a special Mass at the beginning of each academic year. All major festivals are celebrated in the hostel with great fervour. An annual All-India tour is arranged for the inmates. Hostel Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The cordiality between the seniors and the juniors lay the foundation for a conducive and friendly atmosphere.
St Teresas College – Ernakulam has two canteens, one each in the Arts and Science Blocks. The canteens serve meals, snacks and soft drinks. Simple wholesome food prepared in hygienic surroundings is provided to the students at subsidized rates. The management provides means of livelihood to destitute women and orphans through the canteen. There are two chapels - one in the arts block and another in the science block. St Teresas College – Ernakulam has a committed N.S.S. Wing. It is a voluntary organisation for the students and teachers to involve in rural development programme and to participate in the socio-economic life of the community.
The NCC has an active army subunit functioning in St Teresas College – Ernakulam. Being the single largest youth organisation in the world, NCC provides the cadets with ample opportunities to enhance their character, leadership, initiative, drive and comradeship amongst the youth. The wide array of activities undertaken by the NCC include basic training sessions in first-aid, drill para signals, home nursing, communication, map reading and weapon training. Advanced training in mountaineering, rock climbing, para jumping and cycling offer the cadets exciting vistas to quench their thirst for adventure. Apart from building sense of patriotism, it also moulds the cadets into able and smart citizens of tomorrow.
