About five decades ago, in 1952, Sri GVG Visalakshi College for Women - Palani appeared on the academic map of Tamil Nadu as the first Women’s college in Coimbatore District. Set in idyllic environs the stone edifice of the college stands as an eternal monument of the philanthropy and foresight of the founder Sri G.V. Govindaswamy Naidu, who envisioned a futurity of emancipated women hood of the socially, economically and culturally backward rural society of Udumalpet in his days. His posterity, the correspondent Mrs.G.Rajalakshmi and the Managing Trustee, Dr.V.Genguswamy Naidu have fostered and nurtured the spirit of their sire over the years enlarging the scope and variety of higher education offering a multiplicity of traditional and modern courses. The story of the growth of the college is one of gradual uphill ascent to the summit of excellence.
Sri GVG Visalakshi College for Women - Palani is started by G.V.Govindaswamy with a vision to educate the tribal, rural folks of the hilly region in an around Udumalpet. His mission has been successfully carried out by his family members, his daughter and his son-in-law, who has been serving the institution and has successfully realized the vision of the founder. The mess provides both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and is run on dividing system. Indoor games and Audio-Video recreational facilities are available. There is a canteen within the campus that provides coffee, tea, cool drinks, snacks, fried food etc. for all non-resident students, teachers and others.
The National Service Scheme units of Sri GVG Visalakshi College for Women - Palani have adopted nearby villages and have served the society in many ways by organizing camps, awareness programmes and service-oriented activities. Respected Secretary Mr.V.Gengusamy Naidu delivered a valuable message during the closing ceremony of National Social Service. The NCC Unit of the College has done laudable achievement. About 10 students have attended the Republic Day Parade over the years. In 2004 an outstanding NCC student had the opportunity of meeting the President and the Prime Minister. Two students attended the Republic Day parade in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
While widening the horizon of the knowledge of the students the teachers of Sri GVG Visalakshi College for Women - Palani also pay attention to the all round development of their personality. The College Union and its affiliated clubs offer sample opportunities to bring out their histrionic talents. Physical Education is included in the Academic Curriculum as a transdiscipilinary paper under the caption "Health, Fitness and Wellness". The college has excellent infrastructure facilities for a variety of Games and Athletic activities. The students of the college have won Shields and Prizes in National, State and District Level Competitions.
