University of Kerala was established in 1937, long before the birth of the state of Kerala in India. The University of Travancore which eventually became the University of Kerala was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the University of Kerala. Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan of the State, was the first Vice-Chancellor. It was the sixteenth University to be set up in India and ten Colleges within the State of Travancore which were affiliated to the Madras University became the affiliated colleges of the University of Travancore. It ranks among the top Universities in India [In 1957, the University of Kerala Act, Act 14 of 1957, was brought into force and the University of Travancore was renamed University of Kerala.


University of Kerala had three campuses located in three different parts of the State viz. Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode. In 1968, the University Centre at Kozhikode became a full-fledged University covering the Colleges and Departments located in Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur Districts of Kerala. The Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Kerala Agricultural University were set up in 1971 and in 1983, the Mahatma Gandhi University was established. With the establishment of these Universities, the area of the jurisdiction of the University of Kerala has been limited to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha Districts and some parts of Pathanamthitta District. The name of the Association shall be University of Kerala Alumni Association. The Association shall be registered under the provision of the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955.


University of Kerala has sixteen faculties and forty-one departments of teaching and research. There are eighty-one affiliated colleges. Of these forty, five are aided first grade Arts and Science Colleges, eight are unaided first grade Arts and Science Colleges, two are law Colleges, four Engineering Colleges, two Medical Colleges, seven aided Teachers Training Colleges, six unaided Teachers Training Colleges, one Ayurveda College, on Homeopathy College, two Fine Arts Colleges, one Music College and one College of Physical Education. Besides this, there is an affiliated institute conducting 2-year full time MBA course. University of Kerala has recently started an Engineering College in its Kariavattom campus.


University of Kerala Library, established in 1942, has a very large stock of books and journals. It has over 3 lakh books and over 1000 bound volumes of Journals. The library subscribes to 43 foreign Journals, over 400 Indian periodicals, 35 popular magazines and 20 Newspapers. The total number of membership of the library of University of Kerala is over 30, 800 out of which student memberships comes to over 12, 270 and that of teachers comes to 2850. The library has now installed computer system for a LAN & CD-ROM network. A microfilm reader printer and a rare collection of journals in microfilm are available here. The Library has CD-ROM on many subjects. Internet facility is offered at slashed rates. OPAC facility also available.


University of Kerala is the first University in the country to provide a student representative to the Syndicate. Presently there are 10 students in the Academic Council and 16 students in the Senate, the Supreme Authority of the University of Kerala. The provision for a separate Students' Council has already been made. There is also a Statuatory Hostel Inspection Board to look after the welfare of students in the hostels. Sahitya camps, film festivals, Nataka camps, Nadan kalamela, Samskarika jatha, Kaviyarangu, Chitrakala camp, Orientation camps, Cartoon camps, and IT fests etc. figure in the programmes of the Union. Apart from taking student teams to various inter-university and inter-state competitions, youth festivals etc., the department organises seminars and discussions, and Talent Award functions to provide cash awards to the winners of Youth Festivals, Drama Festivals etc. The functioning of the Department of University of Kerala is streamlined by the Standing Committee of the Syndicate on students’ services of which the student member of the Syndicate is normally the Converner. The Students’ Accident Insurance Scheme implemented by the University of Kerala in 1996 and the special research grants provided to SC/ST students doing Ph.D from 1996 are other student welfare projects.


The genesis of National Cadet Corpts is traced back to the enactment of Indian Defence Force Act. 1917. Under one of its provisions the University of Kerala Corps was constituted as a wing of the Indian Defence Force. To create an organisation with the primary purpose of molding the youth of the country into better citizens, a committee headed by Dr. H.N. Kuzru was constituted and the National Cadet Corps (NCC) came into being, by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1948. The NCC is not a para military organisation. It is a youth movement. University of Kerala has enormous potential for nation building and with its total strength of over one million students from schools and colleges, NCC has developed into a valuable auxiliary to the education system. Nearly 12,000 teachers/professors from the educational institutions all over the country refereed to as Associate NCC Officers, constitute the back borne of NCC training staff. University of Kerala Computer Centre was setup in 1977 for providing computer facilities for the research activities in the University of Kerala. Being the only centre in South India with mainframe computing facilities, it attracted researchers from far and wide. In the present IT era the centre took up new challenges in the field of IT enabling of University administration. The centre meticulously follows the principles of business process redesign as a prerequisite of IT enabling. The centre has repositioned itself as a software development centre catering to the needs of the higher education sector of the nation. University of Kerala computer centre is located near the administration block in the Palayam campus of the University.
