Ranchi University came into existence on the 12th of July, 1960 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university with headquarters at Ranchi. At present, the University spans five districts of Jharkhand, namely, Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega and Lohardaga. Right since its inception Ranchi University has been alive to the ever increasing demands of higher education. Keeping pace with changing times, the University today offers vocational courses. For the less privileged students coming from the scheduled tribes or scheduled castes, special coaching classes are engaged to prepare them for competitive examinations.
The syllabus for main stream courses of Ranchi University which are provided in science, humanities and commerce too have been upgraded to meet the requirements of University Grants Commission (UGC).

Ranchi University has a central library having more than 90000 text books, 10000 reference books and 350 PhD theses. Students, research scholars and teachers use these materials in its calm, comforting and serene atmosphere. With the introduction of fully operational INFLIBNET facility (connected through dedicated lease line to INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmadabad) the utility of central library of Ranchi University has increased many fold. Several thousand e-journals are thus made available which will immensely help research scholars, students and teachers. As far as extending this facility to other units is concerned this will act as a central hub. Connectivity has already been extended to Ranchi College and very soon all university departments and ASC will have this facility. Considering its importance its working hour has been extended up to 8pm.
The computer center of Ranchi University was established in the year 1976 at the instance of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Centre has installed 2 Mbps Leased connectivity Inflibnet scheme. The INFLIBNET facility is provided to the teachers, research scholars, students, and the administrative staff of the University. Computer Centre is also maintaining the University website. The Ranchi University Computer Centre is equipped with 20 networked computers and is intended to provide the following services: It is poised to provide WI-Fi connectivity to the entire campus, INFLIBNET access to teachers and research scholars, INFLIBNET connection to Ranchi College and P.G. Departments, Preparation of the annual budget of the Ranchi University , Computer training of University Officers, Teachers and Non-teaching Staff.
University always pays attention on the special care of BPL Students. Two students in BPL category are admitted in each P.G. Dept. in each academic session and are given full free ship and scholarship of Rs. 500/- p.m. Five students on merit basis under BPL category are admitted in each self-financing course in each constituent College and are given full free ship.
The Ranchi University has been provided with Banking & Communication facilities. Oriental Bank of Commerce, Extension Counter is giving their services in the campus.
Ranchi University offers different kind of courses in different streams such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Professional Studies, Under Graduate and Post Graduate Vocational Courses, Post Graduate Courses in Arts, Post Graduate Courses in Science, Post Graduate Courses in Commerce, Post Graduate In Law, and Post Graduate Diploma.
The counseling & placement cell constituted in Ranchi University . It is fully functional and has been very active in the interest of the students. More than five hundred placements have already been made in various national companies till 2009. In 2010, the number will increase substantially.
