The New University of Ulster - Londonderry incorporates Magee College founded in 1865 in Derry. Magee College was a college of the Royal University of Ireland from 1880 and later became associated with the University of Dublin (better known as Trinity College) when the Royal University was dissolved in 1908 and replaced by the National University of Ireland. In 1953 Magee College broke its links with Dublin and became Magee University College. It was hoped that this university college would become Northern Ireland's second university after The Queen's University of Belfast. However, this did not happen and instead it was subsumed into the New University, primarily as a result of the unwillingness of the Unionist government at Stormont to have the second university sited in overwhelmingly nationalist Derry, in which "The Troubles" were just beginning to break out. The decision caused an outcry at the time. The University of Ulster - Londonderry was built at Coleraine as part of the UK government's expansion of higher education in the 1960s. Coleraine today is the university's headquarters and main campus. The University of Ulster - Londonderry incorporated the campus site of the former Ulster Polytechnic in 1984. This was the first, and as of 2010, only merger in UK higher education whereby what is now called a plate glass university merged with what would now be a post-1992 university.
The University of Ulster - Londonderry currently maintains 5 sites across Northern Ireland, as well as one "Online" site. In February 2009 the university announced the movement of many courses from the Jordanstown campus to the main Belfast campus and a consolidation of student numbers at Coleraine and the reuse of university grounds for a business park. The university incorporated its four campuses in 1984 under the UU banner; these are located in Belfast, Coleraine (site of the administrative headquarters), Magee College in Derry, and Jordanstown. A fifth distance learning campus, Campus One, delivers online programmes; mainly at graduate level.
The University of Ulster - Londonderry campus is named after the College founded by Martha Magee in 1845. It is located only a short walk along the River Foyle away from the city walls and comprises a mixture of historical and new buildings and modern and traditional facilities. The central feature of University of Ulster - Londonderry campus is the original building opened in 1865 which overlooks Lough Foyle. The campus has a friendly feel and students often mention this as being one of the main benefits of being a student here.
University of Ulster - Londonderry is one of the fastest growing University campuses expanding from 274 students in 1983 to over 4,000 today. To facilitate this unprecedented growth the University of Ulster - Londonderry has invested over £50 million to provide state-of-the-art teaching, research and support facilities for students and staff. This funding has delivered a student residential village offering en-suite accommodation; a Learning Resource Centre (LRC) equipped to serve the requirements of students and staff in the 21st Century; and the Foyle Arts Building, housing the School of the Creative Arts.
The Learning Resource Centre of University of Ulster - Londonderry offers study and learning facilities on three floors via 200 networked computers and a further 150 personal study spaces. Computer, printing and photocopying facilities are available within the LRC. These facilities are also available 24 hours a day in the laboratories located close to the Students’ Union and Sports Centre. Students will find everything they need to support their studies within the three floors of our LRC, including Zest. For historians too, the rare books room within the Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Library is home to a collection of globally significant books dating from the 15th to the 19th Century.
The rapid growth in the University of Ulster - Londonderry campus has been achieved by further developing well-established subjects and introducing a range of new subject areas. The aim being to build on the vocational nature of the existing programmes and introduce subjects that will contribute to the life of the city and region. There is an ongoing investment programme for our lecture theatres, teaching laboratories and studios to ensure that the popularity of studying at Magee is matched with new purpose-built facilities that support all aspects of teaching and learning.
In addition to our teaching and learning facilities, University of Ulster - Londonderry campus has on-site residential, catering, creche and sports facilities. University of Ulster - Londonderry sports facilities include a multi-purpose sports hall, fitness suite and studio as well as a grass and floodlit synthetic 3G pitch with pavilion and changing facilities next to the student halls of residence at the Duncreggan Student Village. Students can also use a range of facilities in the city and outdoor activities include sailing at nearby Fahan Beach, rowing and canoeing on the River Foyle and hill walking and climbing in nearby Donegal.
There are plentiful and diverse options for those wishing to eat on campus.
