Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat started functioning on the premise of the Sarvajanik College of Education from August 18, 1966 which was moved to the Nonresidential Students’ Recreation Hall of Sir K. P. Commerece College in December 1966. In July 1967 the office moved to the Khandwala Bungalow in Athwa Lines. Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat was here that the first academic departments of the University became operational during the Fourth Plan period.
The South Gujarat University, located in the city of Surat, has been renamed and is now called as Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat. The renaming of the university occurred during the calendar year 2004. This name is in honour of the famous scholar and poet of Gujarat, Narmad. One of the most respectable and recognized departments in the university (with new building and huge advanced computer lab) is Masters of computer Application - Department. It ranks among top five MCA institutions in Gujarat. Incorporated in 1967, this university offers postgraduate courses in various disciplines. Besides, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat has non-traditional postgraduate departments such as public administration, rural studies, comparative literature and aquatic-biology.
Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat Library is located at the heart of University complex. The library started functioning in February, 1976. The total construction area of Library is approximately 28,000 sq.ft. The library has a collection of about 1,75,629 Books, 1,420 Theses, 9,585 Dissertations and other reading materials. Veer Narmad South Gujarat University-VNSGU Surat campus comprises of several buildings including hostels of girls and boys, besides Gymnasium, Health Centre, Indoor Stadium and residential quarters for its staff.
