Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur the oldest and premier Engineering College of Orissa, is a constituent College of Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela. It has already produced more than 10,000 graduate engineers and 2000 Postgraduates in different fields of Engineering and Technology. The college was founded on the 12th August, 1956 under Utkal University.
The Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur is located at the foot of the world famous Hirakud Dam amidst beautiful surroundings of lakes and mountains. Burla is well connected to Bhubaneswar and Kolkata with roads and railways. Sambalpur to Burla is 10 kms both by road and rail. Hirakud Railway station is only 2 km away from the college.
Since its inception, the Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur has made a significant progress. Initially, the college offered degree courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering disciplines. In 1972, degree courses in Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering was introduced. B.E. Courses in Information Technology was approved by AICTE and is being offered from the current academic session. Post-Graduate courses in various specializations started in Civil and Electrical Engineering in 1969. At present, the Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur offers P.G. Courses (both Regular and Part Time) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering. Besides, the college also offers a 3-years Masters Degree course in Computer Application (MCA) since 1993. The syllabi have undergone regular changes to update and modernize the course content so as to maintain the level of technical education at par with other institutes of national repute.
Facilities available in the Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur campus for the enhancement of the standard of the technical education, sponsored research, consultancy programmes of industries and R&D sections of national organizations. Semester system is being followed for both Undergraduate and Post-graduate studies. Campus Interviews conducted by various recruiting agencies have created wide avenues of employment for graduate/postgraduate engineering students. A good number of students have been absorbed by various recruiting agencies through campus interviews. Further, students of this college have done extremely well in the GATE Examinations.
The Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur receives 5 years plan grants from UGC and project grants from AICTE, New Delhi, the Ministry of Human Resources Development an Department of Science and Technology of the Govt. of India. The college receives grants-in aid from the Govt. of Orissa.
The Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur library is the largest technical library of the State. A new separate library building has come up with the assistance from U.G.C. and State Govt. and the library has started functioning in its newly constructed building since July, 1997.
The Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur new library building is a three storied one having area of 10,900 sq. ft. The different sections of the library have been planned in different floors. The ground floor is used for the Circulation Section and the General book Bank. The first floor houses the Journal Section, Reference Section, Reprographic Section and the Administrative Section of the Library. The top floor of the Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur is used for Text Book Section. There is a reading hall with capacity for 100 students in this floor. A portion of this floor is used for housing the SC/ST Book Bank. The Library remains open from 10 AM to 8PM on all working days of the week except in the hot summer months (April & May) during which there is a break from 1 PM to 2.30 PM.
The total acquisition of the Library is more than 70,000 volumes including Photostat and microfilms. About 70% of the total collection is of engineering disciplines and balance 30% is of Science, Humanities and General reference type. The library has one microfilm reader for reading microfilms.
Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur is now a member of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology with financial support provided by the All India Council of Technical Education. As such online access to the journals of ASCE. ASME and IEL are available to all the members of the Library. Further under the auspices of the INDEST we have access to JET (J-Gate Engineering and Technology). Due to financial constraints imposed by our finding authority (the Government of Orissa) we have been forced to discontinue subscription to all foreign journals from the Calendar year 2004. However, the Library subscribes to twenty-seven (27) National journals. The current periodicals are displayed in the Journal Hall of the Library.
The Central Computer Facility of the Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur was established in the college in the year 1987; with financial assistance from MHRD, Govt. of India as a Zero level facility. During the year 1992-93, a HCL-HP Meteor - III UNIX server with a number of nodes and PCs were installed. The facilities have been upgraded and expanded from time to time. In the year 1998, an advanced Pentium based SCO-Unix server with 15 terminals was added and a good number of application software’s have been installed.
The Central Computer Facility of Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur has been given a face-lift through a MODROBS project of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. NT based server, a large number of P-III and Celeron PCs, other Terminals have been added during 1999-2000 through the project grant.
The Veer Surendera Sai University of Technology – VSSUT Sambalpur provides central transport facilities to both students and staff. The vehicles under this department are two buses, one mini bus, Three Ambassador cars, and one jeep. The buses are used for industrial tour of the students. Mini bus is used for local tour of the students for attending the athletic meet at a distant place in this region. Cars and Jeeps are used for official work including the works of Training & Placement Department.
