BD Arts College – Ahmedabad, located in the densely populated area and in the heart of Ahmedabad, Capital City of the state of Gujarat, was established in June 1956. The institution for girls is a grant-in-aid college affiliated to Gujarat University and is recognized under 2(f) since 1997. During the year 2005-06 915 U.G students, 66 P.G. students and 167 Diploma students were enrolled in the college. There are 24 permanent and 2 temporary teaching staff, 09 non-teaching and 02 technical assistants. The college conducts courses in eight subjects at the undergraduate level and post-graduate programme in Home Science and Diploma in Home Science of Gujarat State Examination Board. The
BD Arts College – Ahmedabad is also recognized for research leading to Ph.D. programme in Sanskrit. The permission to start M.A. in Sanskrit has been granted by the Gujarat University and it is proposed to launch this programme from the next academic year.
The mission of the college is to cater to the needs of students mainly from the poor, uneducated and marginalized girls students. The aims and objectives of the college are to sensitize the various aspects of women empowerment in the context of social, economical, political and legal environment. The BD Arts College – Ahmedabad envisions seeing that every enrolled girl is empowered to face the society and the world with confidence. To address the intellectual needs of disadvantaged students, the college has attempted positively to create an educational, socio-cultural environment for empowering girl students. Established in 1956, the College has made some efforts to expand its infrastructure facilities in the form of laboratories and set up a computer laboratory within the constraint of space.
BD Arts College – Ahmedabad has a main Library with collection of 26074 books. During the last two years 297 texts and other books as well as 13 journals/periodicals were added at a cost of about Rs. 30,000/-. Reference section of the library has 555 books. There is no adequate and proper sitting arrangement in the Library. Which can accommodate at the most 15 students? The college should make provision of additional enhanced budget to purchase more reference books and subscribe to journals in the research areas of interest.
At present the working hours of the BD Arts College – Ahmedabad library is only five and half hours. It needs to be extended further for the benefit of students and the faculty. Various activities in the library relating to cataloguing, lending and stock verification of books etc need to be computerized. There is no internet connectivity and Xerox facility in the Library as of now. It may, however, be pointed out that efforts have been initiated to computerize the library very recently through the purchase of computer and software 'Soul'. To strengthen teaching and research, efforts should also be made to avail of the facilities of services like INFLIBNET, DELNET etc.
BD Arts College – Ahmedabad has a small Computer Lab with only 8 terminals. There is thus a need to upgrade and expand the existing facility in the lab. With regard to sports, facilities for some indoor games like Carom and Chess exist in the college. However, there is no playground for outdoor games in the campus due to constrain of the space. Nevertheless BD Arts College – Ahmedabad students are encouraged to make use of ground two kilometers away in another Institute owned by the management at the City campus. In case of health care facilities, only First Aid Box in maintained by the college. Students are, however, allowed to use University Health Care Centre to avail such facilities. There is no proper Common-room and canteen facility for the students. There are also no Hostel facilities in the college. There is thus a need to have Girls Hostel as well as common room and the canteen in the near future. College offers Bachelor and Master courses leading to arts stream.
