Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, the 5th oldest Veterinary College in undivided India was founded on 2nd April, 1927 by Sir Henry Wheeler, the then Governor of Bihar & Orissa. The buildings were completed, laboratories were equipped and teaching & professional staff joined the alma mater in 1930. However, the college started functioning w.e.f. 7th April’1927 itself under the guidance and supervision of Dr.R.T.Davis as Principal of the Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna with a team of renowned scientists specialized in Breeding, Feeding, Management and Disease control of Livestock & Poultry species. During the post independence period, Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna developed to its full capacity and occupied a prestigious status associated with strong academic base for teaching and research in the field of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry as well as advanced Veterinary clinical services to the society. This Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna acquired world- wide recognition for Human Resource Development through excellent teaching by qualified, experienced and committed faculty members; training of quality services to the farmers; strong clinical and para-clinical setup; well organized livestock farms as well as research stations and other ancillary facilities. One of the best Tharparkar herds, Central Poultry Farm and Livestock Research Station in its vicinity under one administrative and financial control contributed significantly in attaining the objectives of this Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna institution.

In the beginning (1930-1949), a three year diploma course was started awarding (G.B.V.C.) Graduate of Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna Diploma. Keeping pace with the advancement of Science & Technology, four-year degree course awarding the degree of B.V.Sc. & A.H. was started in 1949. An emergency Diploma-Shift-Degree course was introduced in the year 1954-55. The professional competency of diploma holders was also updated by subjecting them to “Condensed degree course” of two years and awarding B.V.Sc.& A.H. degree. The first batch of regular degree holders, admitted in 1949, came out in 1953 and became one of the stake holders of the Livestock & Poultry Resources of India in general and Bihar and its neighbouring states in particular. For the award of diploma or degree, the Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, had been affiliated to different Universities of the state like Bihar University, Magadh University etc. The P.G. programme in different subjects of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry was started in 1960.
The Department of Physiology at Bihar Veterinary College, Patna is one of the resourceful departments of the college. Altogether three research projects funded by ICAR and other agencies have been undertaken out of which two have been completed and one is currently running in the department. Twenty M.V.Sc. scholars have been awarded M.V.Sc. degree in this discipline and more than 100 research papers have been published.
The department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology of Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, Patna has contributed significantly in attainment of name and fame for clinical services to the livestock and poultry owners in the state. The Veterinary Surgeons trained in this department are still performing major surgical operations like cesarean, compound fractures, traumatic pericarditis, repairing of rupture diaphragm, removal urinary calculi etc. in the field conditions. This department of Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna is in service to the society since inception of the college and became PG department in 1963. Altogether 32 M.V.Sc. and 1 Ph.D scholars have been trained and conducted research successfully here and obtained degrees. Scientists of this department have published 105 research papers besides 114 extension publications of high value to the farmers.
The Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, Patna was pioneer in teaching and research of Veterinary Pathology under able guidance of eminent Scientists like Dr.P.B.Kuppuswamy. It was very rich in facilities for teaching & research, and 38 M.V.Sc. Scholars have been produced in this discipline. More than 200 research publication have been made besides teaching, diagnosis and postmortem works as regular features.
The Department of Veterinary Public Health at Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, Patna is well equiped with but an UG department. Post graduate studies have been started very recently and presentaly 3 M.V.Sc. students are on roll.
The A.H extension department of Bihar Veterinary College-BVC Patna, Patna is an UG department. The extension work is being conducted in association with the faculty members of others departments.
