Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU was established in 2nd April, 2003, Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa is named after Jan Nayak Chaudhary Devi Lal, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India and the former Chief Minister of Haryana. This University was set up by the Government of Haryana under an Act passed by the State Legislature. Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU has a sprawling campus of 213 Acre 4 Kanal 12 Marlas at the Barnala Road, Sirsa. The main objective of the University is to facilitate, promote and excel in Higher Education, Research and Consultancy in the contemporary as well as emerging areas of knowledge. The emphasis is to impart quality education by providing congenial and liberal atmosphere in the campus. The inception of high-tech culture involving computer-based facilities, internet connectivity and modern administrative techniques have been integral characteristics of this University from the very beginning. There is a good stock of books and study material of high standard in the university library. Research journals of national and international repute are being subscribed.
There are 16 teaching departments with 36 courses in the University. Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU has very well equipped library, laboratories and hostels for boys and girls. Well-known, reputed and experienced academicians and professionals have been associated in preparing the academic curriculum of different courses. It is important to mention here that special attention has been given to follow the guidelines of the UGC and other regulatory bodies in preparing the course curriculum. Haryana Govt. vide Notification No. 38/23/07-2TE dated 28.06.2007 attached Chaudhry Devi Lal Memorial Engineering College, Panniwala Mota (Sirsa) to the University as its constituent College. This college sprawling over an area of about 45 acres offers graduation programmes in 6 branches of Engineering. Admissions in this college are made on the basis of the result of All India Engineering Entrance Examination-AIEEE.
Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU has one Teaching Block comprising 100 class rooms, tutorial rooms and rooms for teaching and supporting staff, VIP guest house, Vice Chancellor’s residence and 87 houses for the teaching and non-teaching staff and four well-furnished hostels for boys and girls. Majestic building of another Teaching Block will be ready for occupation in June, 2009. It will house Science Departments such as Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Food Science & Technology, Energy & Environmental Sciences and Mathematics. The university has developed its own Media Centre equipped with hi-tech gadgets.
The department of Computer Science under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology of Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU has three well-equipped Computer Labs. Having around 100 computer systems (Acer P- IV and Celeron) and two Servers. Internet facility is also provided in the lab through dial up connection of 1 mbps bandwidth. The University is planning to widen the bandwidth through VSAT connectivity.
A good library is the backbone of an educational institution. Enrichment of Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU library is a top priority. The Library at present has a total collection of 19,913 books. The Library subscribes to 76 Indian Journals of national repute, 25 foreign journals, 10 magazines, one Employment News and 13 newspapers to cater to the need for general information. The photocopier facility is also available in the University Library.
At present, there are four hostels in Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU: two for girls and two for boys, namely, Harki Devi Bhawan (Girls Hostel-I), Kalpana Chawla Bhawan (Girls Hostel-II), Lala Lajpat Rai Bhawan (Boys Hostel- I) and Sardar Patel Bhawan (Boys Hostel-II). All the four hostels have requisite electrical gadgets. Electric geysers have been installed in bathrooms. Water coolers with Reverse Osmosis System have also been provided. Two separate lawns have been developed in the premises of Girls Hostel. Two Badminton Courts have also been constructed. In future, a DTP hub is planned for each hostel to help students. Besides Computers with all paraphernalia and broadband facilities will be ready for the use of students.
Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU offers different kinds of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programme. Undergraduate courses such as Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, Bachelor of Computer Application, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Law, Bachelor of Physical Education. Postgraduate courses like Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Computer Application, Master of Commerce, Master of Physical Education, Master of Science, Master of Technology.
Chaudhary Devi Lal University-CDLU established the University Centre for Distance Learning which offers various job-oriented courses through Distance Education Mode. The University Centre for Distance Learning has planned to meet the challenges of the times and growing requirements of the people of the area. The Centre offers several courses through distance mode such as BCA, BA Mass Communication, MBA, MCA, M.A. (Mass Communication), M.A. (English), M.A. (Education), M.Sc. (Computer Science), M.Phil. (Commerce, Computer Science, Education, Management, Economics and English), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application, Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, Diploma in Computer Science & Technology and Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication. The Distance Education Council has approved all the courses run by University Centre for Distance Learning through Distance Education Mode.
