Dhemaji College which is now a leading institution under Dibrugarh University had a humble beginning as an institution with lighting in the field of higher education in Dhemaji district in 1965.The college was the fruition of a long cherished dream of the people of Dhemaji district who under the inspiring leadership of the leading citizens of the district had to resort to a popular step aiming the establishment of the college in this northern part of the state. This step was ultimately crowned with success when the college formally established on August 1,1965. It was in gratitude to those dedicated people of Dhemaji district that the college was named as Dhemaji College. The establishment of Dhemaji College was a bold and positive step towards the soread of higher educational in this part of Assam.
Dhemaji College is the oldest and premier institution of higher learning in the district of Dhemaji. At present it imparts education from higher secondary to degree level in Arts and Science streams along with different parallel oriented courses with an experienced and efficient teaching staff. Dhemaji College has in the more than 40 years of its experience, carved a niche for itself in the education firament of Dhemaji district, nay the entire north bank of Assam.
Dhemaji College has already celebrated silver jubilee and looking forward for a splendid future. The college has also introduced P.G. (M.A./M.Sc) programmes along with Bachelore Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programers indifferent subjects in the form of ODL under IGNOU,New Delhi and KKHSOU, Guwahati. Moreover with the need of the hour the college has already introduced parallel oriented courses such as certificate course in Computer Application.Human Rights, Travel and Tourism management,PG Diploma Course on Forestry and Wild Life Management etc.. under the UGC sponsered programmes. The college also offers programmes lie BCA,PGDCA, IT etc.
The NEDFi information centre, Dhemaji College provides ample opportunities to the local people along with the faculty members and students community to collect information on NEDFi related as well as rural development issues.As a part of its extension activity, this centre has been established at Dhemaji College under the MOU between Dhemaji College and North-Eastern Developmet and Finance Institution Ltd.(NEDFi),Guwahati.
Dhemaji College has a well furnished computerized library with sufficient number of books, journals, newspapers etc. The library has ideal reading room facility for students and faculty members.LIBRARY, CECDC: Apart from the central library , Dhemaji college offers another provision of library services of CEDDC, Dhemaji College, Students from different institutions along with the students of Dhemaji College can obtained the membership of this library to avail the opportunity of this library at CECDC. In this regard all are asked to contact with the Principal, Dhemaji College. The library, CECDC of Dhemaji College offers membership facility in this regard.
Dhemaji College offers hostel facilities for both boys and girls within the college campus with well furnished facilities. Hostel seats are allotted strictly on merit basis. There is provision for reservation of hotel seats for reserved quota students. Students seeking admission in hostels have to apply in a separate application form which can be obtained from the college office and duly filled application from along with attested copy of Marksheet of the last examination passed is to be submitted to the college office/ Hostel Superintendent. The admission to and conduct in the hostel is governed by the “DHEMAJI COLLEGE HOSTEL RULES”, copies of which are available in the college office and also in the hostels.
Dhemaji College provides adequates faciities for research and extension activities. As such the college is able to complete several Minor Reasearch Project and at present continuing a number of both Minor and Major Reasearch projects undertaken by the faculty members under the sponsership of UGC, DST teetc. The extension activities of the college are further extended through its different study centres and other support services such as Gandhian Study Centre, Human Rights Study Centre, Vivekanananda Study Centre, Dr. B.K.Ambedkar centre, Woman study centre along with NCC,NSS,Eco Cub etc.
Dhemaji College has an Automatic Weather Information Centre under the sponsorship of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Banglore and Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati. Moreover, another Automatic Weather Information Centre is installed in the college sponsered by ASTEC and Department of Science and Technology,Govt. of Assam. A beautiful Botanical garden, Medical Plants Garden, Green House, Orchid house etc. are some of the assets and attraction of the institution.The college has been cnferred as College of Centre With Potential for Excellence (CPE) status by the UGC in 2010.
