Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun, formerly known as Indian Photo-Interpretation Institute (IPI), was set up in 1966 under the aegis of the Survey of India to provide comprehensive training with hands on experience of the emerging technology. The success of satellite remote sensing in early 70’s created a need for manpower trained in the utilization of remote sensing technology, and therefore, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun was merged with National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) in July 1976. Late 70’s and early 80’s saw the emergence of remote sensing as a powerful tool for natural resources survey and management and in the year 1980, NRSA came under the umbrella of Department of Space (Government of India), which is the nodal agency for the development and application of space technology and science for the socio-economic benefit of the nation. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun trains people and develop capacity among the users. It also keeps data purchase market active.
Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun is situated at 4, Kalidas Road, Dehradun.College has come a long way. Journey from photo-interpretation to institute for remote sensing and Geographical science and IIRS has come to qualify for international stature. Today we have courses for all levels of users from researchers to policy makers. Its goal is to develop a mechanism from pixel to policy through human capacity building in Natural Resource Management. It is focusing to develop electronic course through Internet/developing network with non remote sensing institutions and nation building programme and increasing its outreach.
Besides, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun has also contributed towards several R & D projects that has helped in operationalisation of technology in various application areas like landslide hazard zonation, ground water targeting etc.
Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun Library started with a small collection of books and journals. But now the library collection is one of best collection in the field of Remote Sensing and its application areas. The Library is dedicated to serve the information needs of the scientists, researchers and students of the Institute. Day by day Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun library is growing in terms of services and latest collections in the field of Remote Sensing and its applications. To provide efficient and fast service library house keeping operation and information services are automated with popular and latest library management software (LibSys ver 4.0). The library collection can be browsed through intranet. The Barcode technology is being implemented for circulation and inventory control. Other than traditional document and information, library has good collection of electronic information resources i.e. e-Journals, e-Books, Online databases and sources of information of open access information resources. Students can play cricket, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, basket ball at the IIRS play ground. Foreign trainees/students stay singly at the beautiful International Hostel.
Geographic Information systems are the most important suite of software for integration of data collected from diverse sources. Therefore, GIS is widely used to develop models, to make predictions, to emulate or simulate a natural phenomena, to substantiate a hypothesis or just to see what’s there in the digital database. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing – IIRS Dehradun is the hub of GIS software in this part of the globe with various levels of GIS software starting from simple 1-D, 2-D to very advanced 3-D software packages. IIRS has one of the largest installation of image processing and GIS softwares (Table 2) through central servers and made available through intranet facilities for training and education. has set up an excellent facility for accessing Internet through a dedicated line based microwave link from VSNL. The Internet can be accessed from each division and library by faculty and students. It provides ample opportunity to explore Internet resources for research and training activities. An extension counter of Punjab National Bank is functioning in administrative building within the campus on all working days. Students can make use of the personal banking facilities at the extension counter.
