Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat is the only premier institute in the District of Middle and North Andaman. Its sphere of activity and catchment area ranges from Paschimsagar of Diglipur till Baratang encompassing a large chunk of territory and majority population. Initially started at Car Nicobar in the year 1992 and shifted to Mayabunder in the year 1994.
In a sprouting Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat campus of 10 hectares eco-friendly atmosphere, enchanting sea and virgin forest, the collage is an attraction not only to the students but also to a great chunk of tourists and visitors who go to Karmatang via college road. Initially started with meager student strength of less than 100, it has now reached to a total strength of 600 with 28 teaching staff, 30 non-teaching staff and more than 50 supporting staff.
The Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat Campus starts with a bronze statue of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi which is a source of inspiration to all students and staff The statue is surrounded by different types of flowering and ornamental plants which gives an esthetic sense to students, staff and visitors when they enter the college. The Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat is having one administrative building with Principal Chambers, Visitors Room, Office all the Heads of the Departments, Common Staff Room, Admission and Examination Wing, Computer Lab, Geography Lab, Stores , Record Room, NSS unit, IGNOU centre and many other allied rooms utilized for academic and cultural pursuits. Besides there are adequate staff rooms and class rooms of Arts, Commerce and Geography. Added to this a well equipped triple storied library having full-fledged service amenity such as reading room, reference section, issue section and seminar room. The Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat also possess a well furnished CONFERENCE ROOM accommodating 150 students equipped with PA and projector system.
Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat is also having a well furnished canteen which has been given on contract basis. One of the achievements of this college is having sufficient staff quarters and earmarked Principal’s quarter which caters the needs of all employees who want to stay in the campus. Amenities like water, electricity, cleanness have been maintained which creates a congenial working atmosphere for the staff as they develop affinity by staying together. The Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat is also having two standard hostels for boys and girls for all the students who desire to stay in the hostel. Presently more than 400 boys and girls stay their respective hostels. The indoor games centre which is popularly known as gym centre is well maintained with all types of indoor games such as carom, TT, badminton, chess were students play and relax under the guidance of the Physical Education Lecturer. The college is growing every year and the growth rate has been accelerated this year to a greater extent.
Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat have two well equipped computer lab one exclusively for examination and other is for learning as college aims to provide 100% computer literacy and its students and staff by 2010. We have also well furnished auditorium having capacity of more than 600 which caters to the need of the Mahatma Gandhi Government College – Rangat students for cultural functions and also for interdepartmental debate discussions. Attached to the auditorium there is a well equipped sports centre with gym, tread mill and other modern equipments. One of the unique features of the college is having its own well furnished Guest House in eco-friendly atmosphere overlooking the sea. College offers Bachelors course leading to different streams.
