Founded in 1910 as a primary and secondary school, Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary became a post-secondary institution in 1931 as Mount Royal College (MRC) offering transfer courses to the University of Alberta (founded 1905) and later to the University of Calgary (founded 1966). In 1970, Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary launched what is now a legacy Aviation diploma program – one of the first aviation programs to integrate an academic diploma program and flight training. In 1972 Mount Royal moved from several buildings in downtown Calgary to a new campus at Lincoln Park on the south west section of the city – a former airforce base. It was renamed Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary in 2009 by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. In 1995 it launched the Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship - one of the first applied degrees in Canada. Between 1995 an 2007, it had launched 14 applied degrees across all disciplines. By 2008, it had begun to launch additional undergraduate degrees including a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts.
Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary is situated in south-west Calgary, Alberta, Canada.As Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary begins its 100th anniversary celebrations, there are approximately 12,000 full and part-time credit students enrolled at Mount Royal, plus an additional 5,000 students in the Music Conservatory and over 50,000 individiual non-credit course registrations per year. Currently, Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary comprises thirteen schools and faculties including the Bissett School of Business, the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Communications Studies, and the Conservatory (Music). Programs in music and commerce/business have been offered consistently since the institution was launched – almost 100 years. The Bissett School of Business - named after philanthropist David Bissett who gifted the School of Business $12 million – occupies a state of the art purpose built building that was opened in 2003 on the Lincoln Park Campus of Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary.
In Fall 2010, there were over 2,100 full and part-time Bissett students enrolled at Mount Royal. The Students Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) operates Wyckham House, a student centre housing dozens of student services, several food kiosks, a used bookstore, a copy centre, an eco-store and the Liberty lounge, the campus bar. SAMRU is owned and operated by University credit students, and offers a variety of services for its members. On October 29, 2009 the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) welcomed Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary as its 95th member institution, thus recognizing its degrees at a national and international level.
Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary campus houses more than 1,000 students who live in residence. These accommodations include single, two- and four-bedroom apartment units or one-, two-, or four-bedroom townhouses. Both types of housing feature access for students with disabilities. All suites are furnished with a fridge and stove in the kitchen and also include telephone service with voicemail, high-speed broadband Internet and cable TV. Residence students also have access to games rooms, storage spaces, social rooms and laundry facilities and on-campus housing is close to Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary recreation facilities and the library.
The Cougar collegiate athletics program competes in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. The Cougars compete in various sports including: hockey, basketball, volleyball, golf and soccer. Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary Recreation enables students and the community to focus on healthy, active lifestyles through its facilities, services and programs. Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary Recreation Centre was expanded in 2002 and features five volleyball/basketball courts, a five-lane running track, fitness centre, pool, climbing and bouldering walls, multi-purpose studios and six squash courts. All credit students automatically become “recreation members” and receive member rates for all programs.
In 2007, Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary opened this new facility created specifically to increase enrollment and retention of Aboriginal students. The centre is dedicated to fostering academic success for Aboriginal students and increasing awareness of distinct Aboriginal cultures, history and protocols. It offers a range of programs, from academic advising to aboriginal school housing to cultural and spiritual advising.
Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary EnCana Wellness Centre offers services and programs for students including access to chiropractors, nurses, physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, athletic therapists, a human rights advisor and ombudsperon, a tobacco reduction educator, a health education coordinator and a multi-faith chaplaincy coordinator. The Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) of Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary is one of the oldest student governments in Alberta. It runs students clubs, organizes concerts and awareness events, and provides dozens of student support services. The Association participates in Mount Royal’s New Student Orientation which assists new students in getting accustomed to Mount Royal.
The Mount Royal Support Staff Association (MRSSA) of Mount Royal University – MRU Calgary endeavors to maintain a mutual and respectful relationship between the Support Staff and Mount Royal University. The MRSSA has the responsibility of ensuring fair and equitable working conditions for staff and strives to uphold a constant communication link between the staff and the University.
