Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing, formerly known as Northern Jiaotong University, is a university in Beijing, China. Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing is a national key university of China, under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education and jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Railways. Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing is one of the first universities in China authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees autonomously. BJTU is one of the first National 211 Project universities, one of Innovation Bases of the National 985 Project, and one of the 56 universities authorized to establish a Graduate School in China. In 1997 and 2006, Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing was ranked one of the best in National Undergraduate Education Evaluation. In 2005, BJTU was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the Pilot Platforms for College English Education Reform.
Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing is located in Beijing’s Haidian District, which is known as China’s “Home of Higher Education”. To the north of the University is Zhongguancun, which is known as China’s “Silicon Valley”. Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing covers an area of 73 acres and is composed of east and west campuses. The campuses have complete facilities and beautiful environment. Today, besides the Graduate School and the School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education, the Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing has 12 academic faculties, which are the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, the School of Computer and Information Technology, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Traffic and Transportation, the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the School of Mechanical, Electronic and Control Engineering, the School of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Power Studies, the School of Science, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages and Mass Communication, the School of Software Engineering, and the Department of Architecture and Art Design. There are also 2 vocational technology institutes and training centers (Yanjiao and Qinghe). The industry-sponsored independent college – BJTU Haibin College – in Huanghua, Hebei has been approved by the Ministry of Education and started enrollment since Fall 2008.
Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing attaches great importance to talents and human resources. Now the University has 2,842 full-time employees, among which 1,668 are faculty members. There are 286 full professors and 588 associate professors, among which 54.3% have doctoral degrees, 87.5% have masters and above degrees. There are 1 national key lab, 2 national engineering labs, 1 national engineering research center, 3 national certification labs, 3 MoE key labs, 4 MoE engineering research centers, 4 municipal key labs, China Integrated Transportation Research Center and China Center for Industrial Economic Security Research.
In recent year, the Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing has been responsible for over 4,000 research projects at national, ministry and municipal levels. The GSM-R for railway mobile communication and the CBTC for railway operation control are among the most influential achievements. In 2008, contract research funding reached 580 million yuan. In 2007, BJTU is ranked 42nd in SCI, 32nd in EI and 12th in ISTP among Chinese universities. UNESCO established a Chair for cooperation between higher engineering education and the industry at BJTU. The annual China Transportation Summit organized by Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing has become an important event for transportation-related industry and research in China.
Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing campus covers an area of 640 thousand square meters, while dormitories cover another 560 thousand square meters. Today, besides Graduate School and School of Continuing Education, Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing has nine other schools which are School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Computer and Information Technology, School of Economics and Management, School of Traffic and Transportation, School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, School of Mechanical and Dynamical Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Power Studies, School of Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and there are three schools of vocational education and two on-the-job training centers for managerial personnel and technicians. Besides, there are still 11 ministerial key disciplines, 71 graduate programs, 28 doctoral programs and 8 post-Doctoral scientific research stations.Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing currently has 22 research institutes & centers and 39 laboratories in a variety of academic fields. Its Traffic and Transportation Simulation Laboratory and Transportation Automation Laboratory are among the best and largest in China.
Beijing Jiaotong University – BJTU Beijing has 8 national key disciplines, which are Traffic and Transportation Planning and Management, Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Communication and Information Processing, Information and Signal Processing, Industrial Economics, Road and Railway Engineering, Transportation Tools Application Engineering, and Bridge and Tunnel Engineering. The University has 120 master’s programs, 60 doctoral programs under 11 first-level doctoral discipline categories, 13 post-doc research stations, and 4 professional degree programs including MBA, Meng, MPAcc and JM.
