National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi was established in 1998 with mandate to undertake, promote and co-ordinate research, train workers and to serve as information resource in identified aspects of plant genome to build a frontline plant genomics institution. National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi formerly known as National Centre for Plant Genome Research is an autonomous institution of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The research programme aims to contribute to the understanding of the structure, expression and function of genes along with arrangement of genes on plant genomes and manipulation of plant genes / genomes to breed improved varieties of food and industrial crops for high yields and of better quality products.
National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi was established to contribute in the achievement of such hopes as a part of national effort for meeting the challenges in the midst of fast pace of international genomic research and grasping of opportunities on long-term basis. The entire working community of National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi is committed to make the institute a premier Institution for plant genomic research in the country. The objectives and purposes of NIPGR are given below. National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi is situated at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, P.O. New Delhi.
National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi has been established to coincide with the 50th anniversary of India's independence as well as birth anniversary of Prof. (Dr.) J. C. Bose. The formal announcement was made on November 30th 1997. This Institute has already placed India among the major contributors to plant genomics. It is hoped that in coming years, the ongoing efforts of NIPGR will allow India to emerge as one of the most important national and international resource institutes for material, knowledge and technologies in the areas of functional, structural, evolutionary and applied genomics of plants, including crop plants.
National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi offers different kind of doctoral courses. Genomics research is providing bridges between different branches of natural sciences and as a result it has seen logarithmic growth over last two decades. All biology research has been permeated by genomics and as a result new ways of tailoring crops for the economic production to grains, vegetables, fruits, fibers, beverages, herbal medicines, pharmaceuticals and industrial molecular are emerging. The world is on the eve of bountiful harvests for mitigation of hunger and malnutrition and heralding of healthy living. NIPGR aims to contribute in the achievement of such hopes arising out of current pace of genomics research.
National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi is a premier laboratory for R&D work on plant genomics and applications in the country. The various research programmes of the institute integrate many branches of natural sciences using plants as the experimental systems for characterizing structure, expression and function of genes, and to manipulate genes in plants to make them economically more important. Accordingly, the NIPGR library functions to assemble/ provide all the important books, journals and electronic resources of information on diverse aspects of plant biology, genetics, molecular biology and genomics. The library is visualized to be a nodal one for plant related informatics. The development of this library is thought to fill the current gaps in the national information system in plant sciences. National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi library facility seeks to provide access to all the desirous national and international users, while primarily fulfilling the needs of NIPGR scientists and research scholars associated with it. This library also networks with libraries already meeting the complementary requirements of R&D work on living systems.
National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR Delhi provides on-campus residential facility to students, postdoctoral fellows, project fellows and short-term trainees. The hostel consists of a common room, visitors lounge and a state-of-the-art kitchen and Dining-hall providing a well balanced nutritious diet. The Dining Hall is open on all days and both Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian meals are served. Special meals are available on request.
