The NENU's predecessor is the Northeast University, the first comprehensive university founded by the Communist Party in Northeast China in Benxi, Liaoning Province, in February, 1946. In 1949, the school was moved to Changchun City and renamed Northeast Normal University - NENU Changchun in 1950. Northeast Normal University - NENU Changchun, located in Changchun city, Jilin province, occupies an area of 1,670,000 square meters, including 730,000 square meters of the main campus and 940,000 square meters of the new campus. Northeast Normal University - NENU Changchun Library (NENU Library) founded in 1946 and its formal name was Northeastern University Library. It grew out of the Northeastern University Reference Room, which was located in Jiamusi city. In 1948, the Northeast Normal University - NENU Changchun Library was formally founded after the school moving to the Jilin city. In 1949, July, the library moved to Changchun with the university. On 1950, April 1st, it changed its name to Northeast Normal University Library. In October, 1958, it changed its name to Jilin Normal University Library. In 1978, the school was again under the control of Ministry of Education. In 1980, the Library restored its present name.
The school's students practice a variety of colorful extra curriculum activities. A two-polar campus culture pattern has been formed which is a series, refined and characterized in specialty. Actively involved in the activities, such as seminar "Challenge Cup" technology contest, Two Hundred Forum seminars, "Civilization and Cultivation" Moral Development, "Shining NENU" Original Art, "Age of Passion" Excellence Exhibition, and Quality of Specialty Competition organized by schools, students have enriched spiritual life, improved over-all qualities, morality in the process and a broad stage for continuing development is provided. At the opening ceremony of the 6th Asia Winter Games, held in the January of 2007, the school successfully undertook theatrical festival, which makes the school the first among all the universities to hold theatrical festival for international sports events. Red Candle volunteer association of Northeast Normal University - NENU Changchun, with a nation-wide influence, gained many national awards. It is respectively awarded as one of the "Ten Excellent Volunteer Service Organizations in China", "Advanced Group in Learning from Lei Feng and Volunteer Services", "Advanced Group in Helping the Disabled".
