Founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai, the Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad had a modest beginning at his residence, the RETREAT, with research on Cosmic Rays.
Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad was formally established on November 11, 1947, in the M. G. Science College, Ahmedabad, with support from the Karmkshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society. The initial focus was research on Cosmic Rays and the properties of the Upper Atmosphere. Research in Theoretical Physics and Radio Physics were added later with grants from the Atomic Energy Commission.
Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad is located in the western part of Ahmedabad known as "Navrangpura". Many other premier Academic Institutions such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Space Applications Centre (SAC), Sardar Patel Institute of Administration (SPIPA), Ahmedabad Textile Industrial Research Association (ATIRA) and Gujarat University are also located in this region.

The Vikram Sarabhai Professorship was instituted at Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad in 1977 to provide a continuing stimulus to the young researchers at PRL and to expose them to the latest developments in the various areas of research through interaction with distinguished researchers around the world. The institution of this professorship was made possible mainly through the funds provided by the Sarabhai Foundation, Karmakshetra Charity Trust (No. 2) and the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Charity Trust. This scheme provides for inviting distinguished scientists to spend some time at Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad in delivering lectures, on topics of high currnt interest and participation and participating in research programmes of the laboratory if possible.
The Computer Center is located in the main Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad campus of the Laboratory. It is spread over 4000 square feet of plinth area with centrally air-conditioned environment. The main objective of the Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad center is to provide services such as networking, email (with protection against virus and spam), printing, back-up and maintaining the computational environment for scientific and engineering research.
Computer Centre is equipped with IBM Power5 server having 4 processors with 8 GB RAM for high computing needs of Scientists of Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad. Computer Centre also has 4 HP servers, each having 4 AMD processors, 4 GB RAM, 1.5 TB disk providing computing power with large disk storage. Computer Centre has also acquired 2 Dual Processor Xeon based servers providing additional computig power. These servers also provide a total of 500GB disk space. All these machines are connected to our high speed (100/1000 Mbps) LAN to provide easy, fast and reliable access to more than 200 PCs and few workstations distributed throughout all campuses of our laboratory. Also Udaipur and Abu campuses are connected to the PRL LAN with 2 Mbps BSNL leased line.
Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad has always maintained an up-to-date library. The library which started from just a single room in 1948 is now spread over four campuses - the Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad main campus, the Thaltej Campus, the Udaipur Solar Observatory and the Mt. Abu Infrared Observatory. The library endeavors to facilitate the students and scientists in their research pursuits. There are about 55,000 documents in electronic and paper formats, which include books, journals, audio visual documents as well as reports, theses and reprints of Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad authors. It has access to about 150 international and national journals which includes 135 online journals, IOP Archive and PROLA.
The Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad workshop provides major technical support to the experimental programmes of various scientific Divisions. Workshop has a variety of machines such as precision Lathe, Shaping, Drilling, Plasma cutting etc. A CNC machine has been acquired recently for very high precision work. Existing facilities include machine shop, design group, welding section and painting section which help in designing scientific payloads and instruments.
The Administration endeavours to facilitate scientific research by providing support at all levels. These range from general administrative matters to infrastructure support including civil, electrical and air conditioning. The Accounts Section handles all financial matters and the Purchase Section facilitates procurement of scientific and other goods. The Stores Section handles inventory of stores and helps with the upkeep of equipment. The Public Relations Office caters to transport and travel needs. Medical care is provided in Physical Research Laboratory - PRL Ahmedabad to all staff members under the Contibutory Health Service Scheme (CHSS), with an inhouse dispensary and links to leading hospitals and medical experts of Ahmedabad. All Sections are managed by professionals and most of the works are carried out using "Computerized Working in Administrative Areas" (COWAA) software developed inhouse specifically for ISRO Centers.
