With a view to giving shape to Swamiji's comprehensive scheme of education, the authorities of the Ramakrishna Mission started the Vidyamandira as an Intermediate Arts College in 1941 under the auspices of Saradapitha, a branch of the Ramakrishna Mission. Though originally Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah was an Intermediate Arts College, it received in 1945 affiliation in some commerce subjects and in 1946 in some science subjects. Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah was upgraded to a three-year degree college with effect from July 1960.In this college the students come into close contact with their teachers and attempt is made to impart an all-round training in an atmosphere of serenity, discipline and moral purity which help them to develop into worthy citizens of the country with a sense of genuine pride in their hoary cultural traditions. The history of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira Library dates back to the foundation of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah in 1941. The library was started with about 200 books mostly obtained through donations from well known persons like Mr. B. K. Basu, Mr. J. N. Chatterjee, and Mr. V. P. Bhandarkar. With the increase of students in the college the library also grew in size and stature. For several years the library was housed in one of the small classrooms of the main building. But with the passage of time, as the number of books increased, the library had to be shifted to a larger hall. Again after overcoming long trials and tribulations, it was in 1987 that a separate, two-storeyed library building, the Bikash Bhavan, became functional in the fulfiling of the long-standing academic hunger of all categories of our users.
A separate unit of the senior N.C.C. (Army) has been in existence in Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah since August 1959. There is an arrangement for imparting training to the cadets within the campus of the college under the able supervision of monastic members and qualified trained officers. One of our teachers, Sri Arup Kumar Dhabal, has recently completed his Pre-Commissioned Training and has taken charge as the ANO of the Vidyamandira NCC Unit. It is to be noted that periodical camp life forms an essential part of N.C.C. training.
An NSS unit of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah started functioning from June 1970. The unit provides scope for the student-volunteers to participate in such social works as environmental cleaning, running literacy centre for the illiterate and coaching classes for poor school boys of the locality , relief work, gardening etc. This unit conducted several activities during the academic year '2010-2011'.
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah has one large playground which is used for football and cricket.Within the main campus of Vidyamandira there are 4 Volleyball courts.There are two Badminton courts in the main campus of the college.There is one Table Tennis room available in each hostel.In every hostel a carrom board is also available for the students.A well equipped multigym has been set up at Shakti Bhavan (gymnasium building) with modern facilities. The trainerat the multi-gym also teaches the boys yogasanas.
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira – Howrah has a beautiful and well-maintained auditorium with a capacity of nearly eight hundred and seventy five. Apart from that, the college has a hall named Asha-Jyoti Conference Hall.
